Default Permits

It seems if you have the money and know a few of the people making decisions you are able to do what you want on the shore line. It is the little guy that cannot ever get anything done.

Trust me I speak from experience. Had the same problem, I was told by the city I am that needed a minor building permit as well as a plumbing permit and a electrical permit. The bldg inspector came and said why am I here, you are just updating and replacing no minor bldg permit needed. Contacted the city and they said it does not matter what he says that I still needed it, after further investigated I found that It was not needed, but try fighting them to get the money back. The electrical and the plumbing was needed to an extent, but those inspectors basically agreed with the building inspector. what can you do they got you by the cahones, but at the end i guess a little bit of fluff money paid out saves problems in the end because of uncertainties.

if I may ask what happened to you?

Default Money has nothing to do with it

Having spent sometime this summer thinking about totally redoing my docking system, and therefore getting a little concerned about permits, that the best thing to do was just talk with people. I will not mentioned names, but I found that even some of the companies that make their living helping people surf through the paper work for dock permits were willing to talk to me, and give me advice. In fact one company told me that they where more then willing to talk and give some friendly advice as they where constantly overwhelmed. I also was easily able to get advice on permitting from the state.... because I never did anything this year the only thing I wasn't able to finish up on was what the town would require....

Now on an issue aside from docks I also had some trees removed, and thought I was going to need a permit for that as well. In fact was in the process of getting the forms from the town. Then the guys from Chippers showed up, and explained the current regulations in the town, and said don't worry about a permit. In fact they said for future work they would let me know when a permit was needed and I could do the paper work or they would for a very fair and minimal price considering the overall cost of having a few trees taken down...( I have other work I need to have done, and talked with them about it at the time )

In short there is nothing that says a home owner can't do the work, all the state and towns are trying to do is stop the abuse (eg. clear cutting like one of my neighbors, long docks, removal of valuable vegetation....etc) and if you talk to people things aren't really as bad as they seem..... You just need to plan a little.....
