How Much Damage Can A Wine Bottle Cause?

My parents live in southeastern Massachusetts along the beach on Mount Hope Bay (Fall River area). Anyway, when we were kids, we used to put messages in bottles and send them off, wondering if anyone would find them. I'd say about 90% of them just ended up on our beach anyway.

We did once find someone else's bottle and thought it must have come from some poor lost soul on a desert island. There was a note, but we couldn't read it anymore. It was fun and mysterious - especially to a 12-year-old.
