Places to stay and boat

Hi, I am relatively new to the forum. My family and I enjoyed the lakes region this past summer and are looking to rent in the area again in the summer of "09" for 2 weeks or more. I trailer my boat and we prefer areas that are not overly busy. Not being too knowledgeable of the area we thought that Winnipesaukee was too busy for us. But I am thinking that can not be true in all areas of such a large lake. For a family that prefers a little quieter retreat can anyone make any recommendations on areas to rent and/or look to purchase. We love the area and are trying to look at properties over the winter

I notice from Bizer's website that he lists 6 Mile Island as a location where you can dock you boat and have a hotel available. Is there a hotel on 6 Mile Island?

Rock-studded areas tend to be quieter. Moultonborough and Melvin Village come to mind—and points north.

The "Basin" in Tuftonboro is usually quiet, as excessively-sized boats find it undesireable.

With respect to looking at properties in winter:

1) Your prospective property's scenic view may be great in winter; alternatively, the hardwood trees will be full of leaves in summer, giving more privacy but less view.

2) Expect Summer's natural haze to diminish a mountain view that is spectacular in Winter.

3) The sun will be rising and setting 'way-off to where it is in winter: a summer sunset directly into your biggest windows can affect your comfort (and thermo$tat) to extremes.

4) The sun (or lack of it) at your waterfront may be a deal-killer for you: Face south for most sun. (East for a fast morning warm-up of the lakefront).

5) Ascertain that the waterfront area in front of your prospective place is not a noisy location. If you face E or SE, you may have early-morning ski-boats taking advantage of a windless (lee) shore.

Conversely, facing the prevailing NorthWesterlies will provide "white sound", making the immediate area seem more tranquil.

(Ski-boats—not to be confused with Jet-Skis or "Ski-Craft"—are trending noisier in more than one respect).

Rafting is another concern.

6) Neighboring excessive-sized McMansions tend to draw gawkers and big wakes. Rubber-neckers' noise and exhaust are left by "hole-shots" when leaving.

No - but I think there may be a rentable property.

Thank you for all the great knowledge!!! Just one question though....what is considered to be an excessively sized boat?

I've seen a 41' Carver bouncing around here and there. Gasing up at The Weirs, and anchored over by Winter Harbor. Looks a bit...well, I guess foolish would be the wrong word...how about "over kill"...although I guess if the boat is also where you live while at the lake, larger is better...but 41', on the lake?

The largest privately owned boat on the lake is a 53 foot Carver, formerly owned by you know who. (If you don't know you are not as "hooked up" as you think.

An excessive sized boat is a boat bigger than yours

The bridge at the Basin has a 5.8 feet of height clearance so many boats cannot fit.

In general the Moultonboro, Tuftonboro side of the lake is much quieter than the Meredith, Weirs, Gilford side. The towns with public docking tend to attract more boat crowds, that includes Meredith, Weirs, Alton, Wolfeboro, and Center Harbor.

A lot of marinas and boats are docked in Meredith, Weirs, Gilford area of the lake and some popular boat destinations (Braun Bay, Johnsons Cove), are on the other side. So if your place is on one of the popular paths between them, you will get more boat traffic.

Why would knowing the owner of the biggest boat be relevant or imporant? Guess I missed something in this thread.

There is always someone out there with a bigger boat and with more money. You'd be surprised at how many people you encounter around town that have more money than "you know who"...but you'd never know it because their money is not who they are.

Grady -- Bizer's chart IS accurate (to a point). There is a Rental property on 6 mile island ...... but NOT what we would consider a hotel! See below

My 25' boat will not fit. We anchor outside, make a phone call, and get a ride in when we visit friends in the Basin. Nice area.

I used to rent in Blackey Cove. I like it there.

Oh boy,you hit a sore subject here but JRC summed it up in a nushell.If your boat is bigger than the ones that complain then it's excessive.Now in my case,I have an 11 foot PWC but if some members here don't own one then that's excessive in another form.

Make sure your new PWC has a porta potty and transom shower like mine does, or else you'll still be eyeing the better model.

We've rented in a lakeside house the past two years on a small cove off Meredith Neck. It's a quiet location, with the occasional PWC or water skier, but much quiter than being on the main lake. I have a 17.5" duel console (Scout Dorado), that while on the small-side, I have not felt unsafe in. We looked at locations further North, but like being close to Meredith/Weirs and all they have to offer. If you really want quiet, chk out Squam.

I opted for the gas grille option in lieu of the transom shower. And I was torn in deciding whether I should go for the PS3 or the XBox360. How many does yours sleep ?

Thanks GB, you beat me to it- I also found that post bothersome. I guess I am not "hooked up" either. Then again, I stopped measuring myself against other via $$ when I was around 20. There are very few people in this world that I wish to trade places with.

Hi, I forgot to mention in my request for a place to rent that it must allow for dogs. I have a black lab that loves boating and the water as much as my family and I do. Also it must have a dock to accommodate at least 1 boat. 24' bow rider. If it accommodated 2 boats and 8 people minimum that's even better

I've e-mailed you about three places that abut one another—any two of which would fill the bill.

Both the height and the depth are of concern there depending on the lateness of the season.

Actually, I had a conversation with Jim Whalley at HK Powersports last week. He has a couple PWCs for sale right now, that he is letting go well below book value. I won't be able to buy until spring, so I am going to have to wait it out. Can't wait to have the new porta-potty installed in the bow compartment!

Hi, I am not receiving any of your emails. Don't use the link from this site....if there is one. Use the one I posted earlier on this topic. The 8 people is only if the dock could accommodate 2 boats as I would split the rental with a friend's family.
