I used the "random name" generator function when I signed up originally.

I picked Lakepilot because it represents two of the things I like a lot. I'm a pilot and we have a place on the lake.

We used to stay on our boat and referred to it as Water Camping. so our handle on the lake became Water Camper. Just seemed appropriate when we started posting on Winni.com to use the same profile name.

It's the nickname of the High School I attended in my youth. Also the nickname for sport's teams at Western Kentucky University.

This was posted back in 2004 as a reply to RG
ToW: Acronym for Tired of Waiting; Derived from the rules and philosophy of life. Tow begins at conception. From that time forth one is in the mode of waiting. So we can most likely blame our parents for ToW. It all starts with the nine month wait to move into the light of the world. From there we wait for the attention, food, bottom cleaning and so on. The parents are in the mode of waiting for the child to indicate their needs which is at the most inopportune times. Which the parents can blame on the child. From infancy to the time we pass into the other life waiting takes at least 75% of our time. For some much more. For example on any given day it could go like this: Rise from bed, no waiting here, well for some of us that is. To the kitchen, start the coffee, we are now in 1xToW. While the coffee is brewing we start the eggs, we are now in 2xTow, Ok at this point you might say you’re not waiting for the coffee because you are starting the eggs. I ask, would you be starting the eggs if the coffee was done instantly? No, you’d cream and sugar the coffee and THEN start the eggs. Now on with the story; we put bread in toaster and push the button down, we are now 3xToW. So as can be seen we can be in multiple ToWs. The eggs finish, we plate the eggs, the coffee finishes, we start to cream and sugar the coffee and the toast pops up so we leave the eggs and coffee to tend to the toast. Now the coffee and eggs are in Tow while you tend to the toast. Here you can see that not just humans can have ToW. At last the meal is complete. However, you might now have to wait for the other person/s to join you for the meal, again another ToW. Now all this is being done very early in the morning while you are waiting for the sun to rise to produce that beautiful sunrise on the lake another Tow. Oh and while all this is going on in the morning you are still in ToW for that return phone call from yesterday. You may continue this story on your own. If not you can ToW for me to do it in the future. Just think, what would life be like if there was no ToW? Instant everything!! There is something to be said for instant gratification. ToW ![]() |

As a kid, spending some summer time with family in Winter Harbor at Camp Theresa. Our Dad named the little row boat the "Fink". There probably were a few beers involved in the process and I suspect our uncle Vinny and/or Uncle Bill may have had a hand in it as well! So in honor of our father and the name of that first boat in the family, we now have a few craft on the lake named after Fink...Fink2, Fink3, Fink4, Fink5. Way to go Dad!

My twin brother's name was Tristan (he passed away since birth) and J stands for the first letter of our last name. I didn't want to use my name because I hate it and it is a common name, so I used my twin brother's name because I like it better.

I am just another one of those dang Swamp Yankees from Rhode Island. Some people up city think it is a derisive term but the Swamp Yankees in the south end of the state are proud to be called that.

Gunner is my nickname. Got it playing high school basketball over 50 years ago. Had a one handed set shot that started at the hip as if I was pulling a gun out of a holster. Coach started calling me "The Gunner" & it has stuck since then. My younger brother had the same shot & was dubbed "Gunner II".

I was named after my boat, thinking I'd never get rid of it. Then I did the unthinkable and sold it to go bigger. Shocking I know. Now I own a Sea Ray but can't bring myself to change my name since I've had it for so long now.

I am a serious Skipper hence my forum name.
I keep training to be a great Skipper. Ice in or ice out I want to improve my skill. Do you know what it's like to be a real Skipper? Click the link in my signature line. To see a short video clip of an extreme Skipper click HERE. Nice idea for a thread. More of the lurking members should post the derivation of their forum name. Cheers ![]() |

"Codeman" was my nickname for my golden retriever Cody, who actually passed away last night at the age of 15+. He will be missed dearly. So much for holiday cheer...
"671" does not have a meaning, it was simply 3 digits that AOL used to differentiate my screen name from others when I got that email address 13+ years ago. |

I got back on to say I'm sorry to sound flip and "funny" in the light of the posts just before mine by tis and codeman671. To lose a loved pet is exactly like losing any other family member, because that is what they are. We lost a sheltie we'd had for 12 years, three years ago and it nearly killed us. We were not going to have any more dogs..."too old"! That lasted 12 days. God was good enough to let another sheltie arrive to rule us inside of a couple months. I don't know where we'd be without her now, so you have my heartfelt sympathy. The pain was bad; I hope you'll get to have another "joy" down the road.

Well...
I guess there are a number of reasons for my "handle." First, it's a play on the name of the street our lake home is on. Second, it's to honor our favorite lake waterfowl, in all its mysterious majesty. Third, it probably has to do with the dubious state of my own sanity, in the eyes of some. But it definitely does NOT have anything to do with the quality of my singing voice ![]() |

I was lurking & reading so much bad info and crazy stories about speed and lack of respect for others every where especially on the Lake. I grew up being taught respect for others in life everywhere especially other boaters, other skiers on mountains, other drivers on the highways, that I gave up boating and anything with an engine. I'll only kayak or canoe or sail on any waterway or the Lake on weekdays. There is so much disrespect. I'll say just:
no engine..... |

My name was sort of picked for me. You see, my great great grandfather on my mothers side of the family had an uncle whose 1st cousin was named, wait a minute, it might have been a 2nd cousin. Awww, this is going to get too complicated. The short version is that I'm using the name MARK on the forum.
![]() This is a wonderful topic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and the other similar forum thread. That older thread (2007) asked for more detail. Not just screen name but avatar and user's history with the lake. That other thread can be found if you CLICK HERE. The background of the forum name Fatlazyless in the older thread is much different than his explanation in this current thread and somewhat revealing. Check out his story in message # 20 in the older thread. I do not know how to link to individual posts like #20 or I would have. Still many more forum users who have not posted to either this or the older thread. Don't be shy. Add your name. If you never thought you had nothing to post, you do now ![]()

When I started coming up to the lake in the early 80's with my friends, we often talked about retiring here and living the geezer life. We planned the things we would do in retirement, sort of a bucket list, which included building a submarine, opening a local radio station and operating a lake barge. When the forum first started in the 90's, the phrase "when we are geezers" was still a common start to a conversation. I chose the name Lakegeezer, knowing that someday I wanted to be one and knowing I had better grab the name before anyone else did. I'm not yet retired, but moved to the lakes region in 2008 as a full-time resident. I'd still like to build a submarine contraption some day. So - I'm still growing into my user name, and fully expect the Winny forum to still be here when I reach my goal.

I’ve been coming to the big lake for many years. The family has stayed at some of the yacht clubs around the Lake as well as a few in salt water. I truly love the Lakes Region and wish I could afford to live by the Lake. With today’s economy however, I’m not sure I can live where I am or anywhere with a real roof and indoor plumbing!
One of the meanings of “Commodore” is the presiding officer or president of a yacht club. Many benefits go along with being a Commodore. It can be a powerful position. The head of the YC usually gets the best of everything. They get the best response to personal concerns. They have more influence on policy. They get more respect and they stand out from other Yacht Club members except from those few who think you are doing it all wrong. ![]() A bit of work and politics and you receive the power and control often given to a Commodore along with the perks of the position. I wanted to choose a powerful marine related screen name and The Commodore was just a natural. I enjoy this web site very much. There are many fine people posting here and this thread is a great way to meet some of them. I wish more members would post the story behind their screen names no matter how simple or complicated the derivations. Good wishes to all of you. ![]()

I wrote more of this in an earlier post, but the short version is that "Redwing" is the name my Mother gave to our cottage, based upon a song that was popular in ca. 1940s/1950s, and seemed to capture the spirit of our little, red cottage on the shores of Winni.

Mine is not a random name. I would be proud to tell you that my family name is *Kerr* and my parents named me *Joe*. That way my name, *Joe Kerr*, would be a "clever" name that sounded like Batman's foe the *Joker* and my parents had a wonderful but slightly warped sense of humor. Alas dear forum reader, that is less than accurate. The reality is that I chose this name because I don't like to be serious all the time and the name Joe Kerr makes me smile. That's all. If I get to post something relevant but funny or obviously sarcastic I hope my name will make you smile too. ![]() Thank you Mr. Webmaster for use of your forum and all your hard work maintaining this place and all the features.

Actually, brk is my initials, which I rarely use on public forms (I think this forum and Hacker News (http://news.ycombinator.com) are the only places. -LNT is the initials of our boat name, which I still have not put on the boat itself ![]() Many people have thought BRK was/is short for break, based as you did on my profession/hobby. In retrospect, I should have probably just left off the -LNT.

I am a true believer in getting what I want in life by being really clear on what it is that I want and then I... SEE IT, BELIEVE IT, AND MAKE IT HAPPEN. So, my name here is inspirational... my vision of what eventually I will make happen. However, I should have been clearer and made it "moving to NH" because I actually am escaping NJ and moving to CT next month. Not quite NH but getting closer!

If you are reading this and are a registered forum member you should have a post in this thread.
My forum name comes from my family and friends. They always thought of me as a landlubber. When I first bought a boat they all took pleasure in chiding me by referring to me as The Skipper. Here comes The Skipper they would say. Is The Skipper going boating this weekend? They would ask if The Skipper had his ship together. What does The Skipper want for dinner. Things like that and those that are unfit for a family forum ![]() Now, how about the rest of you! If you are a registered user then log in and post to this thread. All the posts are enjoyable. I came out of hiding to post to this thread and you should too. You know you are out there ![]() |

Well when your last name is HAZEL it only leads to EVERYONE you know calling you Hazelnut. There are so many variations of that now, Hazelnut, Hazelnuts, Hazelnutz (The name of my boat), Hazelbags, Hazeldog, Hazelballs, Hazeman and the list goes on. I swear it's just one of those names that people love to add various endings to.
![]() So I used to have all my email addresses and such beginning with hazelnut@such&such.com. Unfortunately I lost that when Mediaone merged with Comcast. I was elated when it was still available on Winni.com all those years ago when I signed up ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Earlier when I posted in this thread I forgot to include the story behind my forum name although I did go into detail in the 2007 thread that I linked to that asked us to go deeper than just how we selected our name. That whole thread is still very interesting, CLICK: What's in a name to review or add to it.
To say on topic ![]() The letters CQ together are an old telegraph and radio code for, “a general call to any station” usually for an informal friendly chat or quick signal check (unless modified with additional information or qualifiers such as CQ DX which is a CQ to contact distant stations). It is very common to call “CQ” in many Ham Radio modes (not used much in the newer and popular FM repeater operation though). Sea Que was a(n alleged) clever tie-in between the two hobbies, Ham Radio and Boating. My Dad was a Ham and came up with that name for our first family boat around 1958 - I'm keeping up with the tradition. For more detailed information you can scroll down to my post, #106 in the 2007 thread – Once again that thread is HERE. That’s on topic, now to the Saugus Sub-topic (Santoro’s Sub Shop ![]() I saw that yesterday but did not have time to reply. You are right R2B. Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsberg never had any regular shift on WBZ. Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginberg’s legendary top-40 radio program called the “Night Train Show” was heard daily 6-10PM on Color Radio Famous Fifteen Ten, (1510) WMEX Boston He was there from 1959 to ~1967. A different 1510 signal from that of today. Arnie was a true radio pioneer on the air and in the business. Anyway, I may be a bit sensitive to the distinction between the more straight laced WBZ versus the more free spirit of WMEX. As a pre-adolescent I fantasized about being the Arnie Ginsberg of a future generation. When I was in college and the radio bug bit me I thought it would be a life goal to be where Arnie was. Well, a year out of college, back in the early 70’s, I wound up doing Arnie’s old shift, on-air 6 nights a week, 6-10PM on 1510 WMEX. By then radio had changed since Woo Woo blazed new trails. He started as a technical type Engineer who crossed over to talent - something only a rare few have done in Boston. I used to pester my folks to bring me to Adventure Car Hop, one of the show sponsors, so I could get a "Ginsburger". If you knew the "secret" and said "Woo Woo" you would get a "free record" - at $0.99 for a 45 rpm record in the store, free was a magic word. The free record was a let down - a promotional copy (and not for sale) of some junk song - the type of record stations would throw away by the buckets full - My first, but not last, media disappointment ![]() Santoro's: Where was Santoro's before it was at the the site of the current drug store? If you remember the Red Coach Grill you probably remember the G.E.M. store across the street bordering Breakheart. And then there was the Drive In theater. Up there. Kiddie Land wow I hadn't thought of that place in decades and I instantly saw it in my mind - I loved it as a tyke. I used to pester my parents to take me there. That circle (rotary) by the HoJo's car hop was the DeFranzo Circle. A short way from there, up route 99, was CHICKLAND. I remember the excitement looking all the racks of rotisserie chicken cooking in the windows at ChickLand - ahh that chicken, they crisped it up with a coating of something and added a super yummy gravy (I'm salivating just remembering). Chickland spawned SteakLand which later turned into Hilltop as I recall. Then Howdy Beef Burger Drive In ($0.25 burgers). On the other side of town, Heck Allen's restaurant - not too far from... what was that place, a combination Library & Sewer department ![]() I'm leaving out a lot of stuff 'cause this is getting (it got) way to long.

Wow, you guys bring back some memories. Lived in Salem at the time and drove my fathers 57 and then 61 Chevys to Adventure on a regular basis in the early 60s. I never got a free record but if you said Woo Woo Ginsberg you got free fries or something.
My first wifes father used to be the projectionist at the drive-in in the late 60s so we used to get in for free when we were dating. |

Island Life is much different than life on the main land - especially when you're on an island without electricity. I am very thankful that I get a few months each year to live the island life.

I really dont remember who the customer was that called me the machine shop man. I do recall that it was his friend that asked him about where to have his engine rebuilt and not being able to remember my name at the moment he direct his friend to go see the machine shop man in Nashua. So when he walked into my shop he stated that he was here to see the machine shop man and it sort of stuck with me. I shortened it up to Macshpman to make it the screen name I use. So I got my screen name from my customer Kevin and he got a rebuilt LS6 454 from me. Its has worked out well for both of us.

My name is pretty simple and I use it often. I love the beach and Sandy surely fits with beach. I enjoy using a non-gender specific name. I like various types of Sand including the very fine sand. It is hard to find good sand available to the public around the Lake
A few people really think my family name is Beach as I have been called both a Beach and a son of a Beach. If you don't know if I am male or female it is more difficult to call me either one ![]() I been driving to the lakes region for more years than I can remember. On the drive we go on Rt 1 through Saugus and Santoro's Sub place has always been a must stop for the family. I remember when it was at the site of the Walgreen drug store and I think that was the first and original location of Santoro's in Saugus. IMO Sea Que's question about Santoro's first location is a trick question. There was another Santoro's in Everett or Revere that opened years after Saugus opened but they were not the same people or quality. That's what we need at the lake. A Santoro's. |

I now know where Santoro's was before it moved to the Walgreen's land. This is more like a trick trivia question. I've exchanged a few PMs with forum members about the original home of Santoro's Subs in Saugus before it was on the site of the Walgreen's Pharmacy. Sea Que remembers the location before Walgreens but I and others do not.
It was in Saugus, not Everett or Melrose or Revere. This was a Saugus location. Thanks for PMs from Just Sold, trfour, Sea Que, Saugus Boater and others. If you don't know or care about Santoro's then at least add your screen name derivation to the thread ![]() Sandy Last edited by Sandy Beach; 06-12-2009 at 03:09 AM. Reason: Clarification |

I have been coming to the lake since I have been 11 years old... way back in 1957, staying at the old Swedish Village on Paugus Bay. Now since I have hung up my VP / CIO title, I am proud and very lucky to be called WINNI-RETIRED. It was a simple name to pick .. it has been our goal to move to NH and the lake after living and working around the world.

Crawford was a company that made cast iron cookstoves in the 1800s and earlyish 1900s. Mine is a ca. 1900 version - the Century Model.
They throw off lots of heat and the oven's great for roasting chicken, baking pies, or even warming up a pizza.
