Documenting 30 Years of the Fishing Derby
MEREDITH — Artists and budding filmmakers Bob Manley and his brother Don Manley of bobdonpaul.com, a Sanbornton Graphic Design agency, are heading back out on the ice this year. The duo has teamed up with Michel Schtakleff, a playwright from Rhode Island, and Kent Rich, owner of Granite River Studios in Concord, to make a documentary film of the Great Rotary Fishing Derby in Meredith. If all goes well this will be the project’s second and possibly the final year of filming. Bob, Don, Michel, and Kent are very excited to film what is turning out to be one of the best Derby's in years. For 30 years, the Meredith Rotary has been raising money for the Meredith community and local charities, over 1.3 million dollars to date, by putting on one of the largest Ice Fishing Derby's in New England. Every year over six thousand people gather from all over New England and beyond to drill holes in the New Hampshire lakes in hopes of pulling out the biggest fish to compete for over $60,000 in prizes. Thousands more come to watch. The biggest prize going to the person bringing in the heaviest Meredith Rotary-Tagged rainbow trout, winning an 18-foot Pioneer Sport fiberglass boat and trailer valued at over $25,000 As popular and well attended as this event is, the Derby and the sport of ice fishing remain a mystery to most people. Though small bob houses pepper the ice throughout northern New England, most folks observe this activity from afar. It's a relative few hardy souls who really understand what it's all about. As Bob discovered when he went onto the ice two years ago for a closer look. There is a lot more going on out there than meets the eye. It's the film maker's mission, for the first time in the Derby's 30 year istory, to document the event in its entirety on video and on the pages of an accompanying coffee table book. "It's time the rest of the world got a chance to discover The Great Rotary Fishing Derby, the people, their stories, and all the activities behind putting on and participating in this great event," Bob Manley said. "Join us for a close up and behind the scenes look at The Great Rotary Fishing Derby on the ice this year. If you can't make it out on the ice, stay tuned for our completed documentary and learn all about it in the comforts of your home." bobdonpaul.com and partners have dedicated a portion of all proceeds from the sale of the movie, book, or related marketing materials to be given to the Meredith Rotary to be distributed as part of their charitable giving activities. The filmmakers would like your help. "We are looking for pictures, film, video, newspaper clippings, paraphernalia, and just good stories from past Derby's that will be helpful in telling the Derby's story." If you have any of this material that you would like to share, please contact Bob Manley at 253-7968, or email him at bob@bobdonpaul. com. In addition, Bob, Don, and Michel are looking for sponsors to help raise fund for the films production. For more information go to
