Default Flooring Installation

I would like some advice from Forum members who are knowledgable about flooring. I need to have a plywood sub floor laid, as well as installation of sheet vinyl in a 12 X 12 room. I found a pattern I like at Lowe’s, as well as at Home Depot and understand both have sub contractors who will do the entire job. I wonder if I would get a better price there or from a private contractor? Any recommendations would be appreciated. I haven’t talked price with anyone as yet and am only in the beginning stages of this project.

Default Go Local

I would recommend going with a local flooring dealer - one that's been in business for a while and has a good reputation. If you have an issue, they are close by - they also want to maintain a good reputation.

We used Heckman's in Wolfeboro (603-569-6391) and were very pleased with the result.

Get quotes from as many sources as you can. Ask for their warranty policies. The big box places usually require their sub-contractor service providers to meet their minimum warranty policies and in some instances will back it up themselves even if they have to use somebody else (Sears did this for a family member who was unhappy witha fence installaton).

I used to generate leads for a non-subcontracting service provider and our repercussions for poor service would be to have our displays banned from HD which would have cost us a lot of valuable exposure.

Only use Lowes or HD if it's a mud room and you don't really care about the results. Personally I'd speak with 3 or 4 local people and decide by a combination of who you like and price. I often look for a passion in the person who comes over. Some people come over, throw you a price and leave. Others can talk your ear off all night about their trade Last time a "box store" installed a room of carpet for me they installed the wrong one. Yup, totally the wrong carpet meant for someone else. Had a family member over just to let them in and they didn't know what was supposed to be installed. Needless to say I got it for nothing - big deal! Actually about ready to rip it out again, going to a carpet store this time.
