Default Less mosquito-infested area?

Hi,

I spent my first summer vacation at the Lakes region last week (Newfound Lake). We had such a wonderful time. The small fly in the ointment was - no not black flies. luckily we encountered no black flies. - there seemed to be quite a few mosquitoes going after their meals at night. Yes, I understand that mosquitoes breed in still water, and lake water would be a perfect breeding ground. But are some lakes less prone to mosquito infestation than others?

Default Wolfeboro

I stayed in Wolfeboro for a month last summer and I didn't get bit once!!!

And I never used bug spray either. I was in Winter Harbor and spent almost every night out on the porch too.

I remarked about this to the owner of the cottage I was renting and he said for some reason, that area NEVER gets mosquitos. And he was right.

I was more than pleasantly surprised. Although right down the road (maybe 2 miles from where I was) I took my pups on a walk at dusk (granted the trail snaked around a swamp) and we were bombarded by the little buggers.

Counting down the days until I'll be back at Winter Harbor!!

I'd agree that mosquito infestation is a geographically-isolated issue on lakes.

From the water, check for the residential areas with porches that are not screened-in. They'll most likely be receiving the prevailing breezes, which keep most bugs in check.

It really is not the lake water that is the issue. We had a rainy spring, resulting in pools of stagnant water, the real breeding ground. It has been a bad mosquito year to date!

I've found that mosquitoes aren't around in "dawn's early light".

Those are the hours—during which—most folks don't have the opportunity to fully experience Lake Winnipesaukee.

Hi, if you're concerned about the mosquitoes and your baby, I bought net type things that have 2 sizes. The first goes over the car seat, and the second fits over a pack and play. It won't let any mosquitoes in under the net to bite your baby.
