Do you Think It's Time To Replace This Buoy?

This buoy has been like this for years. Even though it is located way up in Green's Basin I think it is time to replace it. What do you think?

I think it falls under a historic artifact protection clause. Best leave it alone so as not to ruin the natural character of the buoy and surrounding area.

Nahh !! All it needs is a fresh coat of paint and it's good for another 10 years.

Don't let the historical preservation society find out about this.... otherwise it will end up as a historical site, and will only be preserved, followed by Green's Basin becoming a hot spot on the lake, by all history buffs....

It's still floating so it can't be replaced. There are several buoys that have been sunk in Sally's gut for at least 5 years

This appears to be located in the historic district already. I will check the local zoning laws to see if there is some sort of standard that must be maintained on the appearance. That is original paint and trim so there is some compliance there.

It is amaziing that it is still (somewhat) afloat-a testimony to the preservation techniques used at the time of installation. Either that or it is resting on the bottom and can't go any deeper...

Public safety generally trumps historic accuracy but they've been using wooden spar buoys practicaly for-ever, so a replacement should not be an issue. My suggestion is to forward a copy of that picture to NHMP so they prioritize it on their spring cleanup cruise.

SBC is on to something......you just can't go out there and FIX something on the lake. You'll need to clear it with the town, EPA, OSHA, Dept of Environmental Services, Wetlands Bureau, SDWA (drinking water protection) since Winni is the source of Laconia's water supply, Dept of Safety (Marine patrol, division).....did I miss anyone?

I did email the NHMP and attached my picture of the buoy. I haven't heard anything yet. Maybe I should start a buoy replacement petition--Ha Ha ( only joking ).

Add: Army Corps of Engineers, Homeland Security (this buoy must be protecting something!), Moultonborough Conservation Commission, Fish and Game. And then call Betsy and have her propose a bill in the legislature to increase boat registration fees to cover the administrative costs to replace a buoy.....we can call it the Buoy Annual Replacement Fee (BARF !!!). Need I say more....?

Now why would anyone want that darn buoy repair/replaced. It will just increase all fees that have anything to do with boating and I for one believe that they are high enough now.
This thread has fore warned me about it now.

Has anybody told them that boats don't have head lights to provide the light that might be reflected? I was always puzzled by the reflectors on swim rafts for the same reason.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know why we ended up with Black and Red bouys? Red makes sense, bright, visable in low light, etc. But black?? Who hasn't been driving around in low light conditions squinting to find the black marker against the black sky and water? Why not bright green instead which would be way more visable than black?

Now you've done it. Put the whole of Greens Basin in jeopardy of being off limits as a historical preservation area. All you have to do is go out after dusk and replace the buoy with a new plastic one.

There is a more recent standard for inland waters that changes black to green (among other things) but NH decided not to switch. This came up over 10 years ago when I got my Safety Certificate.

It's in worse shape than the black & white buoy I found lying on the bottom near Rum Point last month. Still chained to a block. Guess it just didn't feel like floating anymore. (And it had been replaced)
