Loon and Geese
I was out to snap a few Sunrise images this morning and along came this single loon. It was calling like crazy. It has lost all of it's summer colors and looks to be trying to find the gathering spot for the trip to the ocean.
Overhead was a hugh flock of Canada Geese, what you see in the picture is only about half of the group heading south.

Thanks for letting me know! I wish they would at least send an email to let folks know that they are going to use a picture on air.
I submit pictures via their ULocal program.

'Dunno about Geese, but it's likely their call would have allerted you...

Ah-OOOOOooooooooooo, they go Ah-OO! We had almost daily sightings of Bald Eagles by listening to that special Loon call. Chipmunks and crows assisted in pointing out aerial predators, but not as accurately as the Loons did! |

When the loons gather they sort of "yip" to each other. Almost sounds dog-like.
Perhaps "loony" to us but perfectly intelligible to them.

Since you brought it up...
A man was pulled over by a game warden because he got caught shooting loons, and the warden said “It’s against the law”.
The man said “But my family is starving, and that was the only thing I found to feed them with.” And the warden said “OK- well I’ll let you go this time but don’t shoot them any more. BTW, do loons even taste good?” And the man said “It’s ok, but not as good as Bald Eagles”. |
