We had enough room by the Long Island bridge to get our 13 ft whaler in and go for a wakeboard set. Didn't even get wet!

I guess it was OK because it was only a 25hp motor to not have a spotter????
Straight out of the Boat NH Course from the Marine Patrol. Plain and simple.

Looks like fun getting out for an early ride well done... still a ways out for my crew to be going but as already mentioned you have to have a spotter and check for the 150 foot rule. The dock starts are a thing of the past and coming back into shore you can't do either. Not to rain on the parade but better us letting you know then MP.

jmen24 when I took my boating test the book says the following. I'm not aware any of this has been excluded but this is what I'm going from.
Q: How far do I have to be from other boats, docks, swim rafts, and shore when I am going above headway speed? A: You must be 150' from other boats, docks, swim rafts, mooring fields, swimmers, designated swimming areas, floats, and shore before traveling above headway speed. When returning to the shore with a skier, the towing vessel and the skier must remain at least 150 feet from shore. you can find this all at http://www.boat-ed.com/newhampshire/...3101_700056585 HellRazo...as for negative comments I didn't see any. I just saw some folks pointing out a few helpful suggestions in the event they didn't want a visit from MP. |

Educated guess, but the OP probably knows the "rules of the road."
When those crazy kids are out behind a boat in the heart of the season I'm sure it won't be that 13-foot Whaler with the 25-horse engine, and the odds are good that there'll be a spotter....or two... ![]()

Which is a shame. Where I learned to ski we always landed our skiers close to shore. We were teenage girls and did not want to get our hair wet! On one ski, I can only start from shore... then again... I have not done that for a few years.
MA is a little more lax on the skiing rules than NH. Nice video, by the way. I enjoyed seeing you close up to the ice. IG

Glad everyone is enjoying the video. We log over 100 engine hours a summer behind our Nautique. Didn't really post for a boating lesson as we're well aware of the laws. I was fairly confident MP wasn't coming around the bend in an ice breaker and if they were the thrill would be worth the price of admission.

I had this conversation with the Marine Patrol a few years ago when a neighbor was taking off from the shore and dock... There are caveats in the rule that allow a skier to take off from a raft, dock or even shore. This is provided that these is no risk in doing so. Defining "Risk" is hard to do... obviously if you have to go through a mooring filed on your way to open what this would be a risk. In my situation, I saw the risk of swim rafts further out, as well as a moored sail boat. Eventually that summer the Marine Patrol did catch up with the person, and they had a discussion. As the person continues to do beach starts, my belief would be that they decided there was no risk....
Now as for people noticing that there was no observer, and as an avid water sports enthusiast. I do have to say well impressed by the video, as I think it is kind of cool. I am not impressed by the lack of consideration for safety. There should always be an observer in the boat, period... I understand the whaler only had 25 h.p. but that isn't an excuse... I used to water ski all the time, early and late into the season, and would never have left the dock with out an observer in the boat.....

I have skied when the ice is barely covering the surface in the winter when it is snowing and skied in the spring when there is ice on the lake providing the wind is blowing in the right direction. I ski off beaches and docks and back on a beach or dock and never wet.
I still do even though I know you need to stay 150 ft when coming in. Going out you do not need keep a distance. They key is being reasonable and prudence. If there are no hazards to jeopardize the safety of anyone then I consider it safe to launch and return to dock or beach. I had a discussion with the MP on this about 14 years ago and all is OK. As for observer, I agree that there should be an observer regardless of HP. What I notice is I have seen observers as young as 7 or 8 years old and the law says the observer should be capable of assisting the skier in emergency. I have yet to see the MP pull them over.

First, who can be an observer? The observer must be at least 13 years old and capable of assisting the skier on board. That means that grandma may not cut it.
WOW! The state has loosened up the observer rules. The maximum number of skiers is two without a NHMP permit. But you only need one obsever for both skiers. Tubing: You can take up to six tubers with any set up. If you have more than three tubers you must have two observers. Misty Blue |

Love that video ATD, great edit w/ the music overlay! Also love the Whaler, looks to be a "Rockland" 13SS, best 13's ever made, (had the same one - with a 40hp - on the lake as a kid). The spotter thing kills me, give it up people, it was a perfectly clear sunny day, in April, with NO ONE ELSE ON THE WATER, anywhere! He wasn't being reckless, he wasn't hurting anyone or running over a family of Loons, he was having some fun, life is short, lighten up folks!
I have LOTS of great memories from summers on the lake as a kid and adult, not all involved going to Our Lady Of Victory in Ctr. Harbor for Sunday Mass. I worked for one of the marinas in the channel some years ago (90's era) during school breaks, summer and winter. We were prepping some new boats for a boat show in Boston one January winter and I got to run one up and down the channel - as the rest of the lake was frozen solid - WOT. Not too many people can say they have done that, it was a (freezing-cold) blast, and NO ONE / no-thing got hurt or negatively impacted during that. The lake used to be such a different place, everyone respected everyone else, you got the friendly wave all the time, you could do things like this and not illicit the stink-eye from others. Today everyone feels they have some sort of "obligation" to speak up and be the rule police. Jeesh... ![]() |

It would be great if all of these arm-chair cops would rat out the real safety violators during the busy summer months. We should all just sit in the house, pull the shades and stay SAFE.

I think the young man is very talented and did an excellent job with the video and I enjoyed watching it.
But for the life of me I can't figure out why people post some of these videos that are violating the rules and laws of the State they took them in. Also there are adults who are watching him that should know better. I'm sure this happens a lot during the summer when the Lake is populated with a variety of people who just want to have fun and will do anything to get a high. OK now go ahead and beat me up for being a "Debbie Downer".

If only all you keyboard jockey's knew how many scarecrows show up in wakeboard boats you'd all probably have a heart attack from the fact that the law was being broken. Heaven forbid somebody does something they enjoy with confidence knowing they DID NOT NEED a spotter.
As he mentioned, he knew what he was doing and he didn't post it for a boating lesson or a lecture on what he should and should not post. Get over yourselves...You're not know it alls, you're not law enforcement, and you're not helping this situation. This was a positive post about someone having fun (god forbid we do that) early in the season. All of your asinine assumptions about what COULD have happened but DIDN'T are too far-fetched for someone as experienced as he is. People honestly need to lighten up and get out of the house more often. Live a little...

![]() As to the ice, I've navigated my outboard boat at top speed across "thin" ice floes. It really cleans the bottom of the hull! But on one occasion, because I'd spent so much time out in the Broads, I didn't notice that the wind had "navigated" ice floes to close me out of an ice-free return. That return was a great deal noisier! ![]() Last edited by ApS; 04-27-2014 at 09:47 AM. Reason: change flow to floe |

To those who are concerned about the possible violations of the law in the video:
Yes, we need laws, including the ones about spotters and distances. Those are good laws and we should abide by them. But if ever there was a case for just having a good time, taking reasonable risks, and overlooking strict compliance with the laws, in my opinion, that video is a perfect example! Let's be reasonable. |

It has no bearing... It's not like the force of law could be used against him. Even if it could, he sent in a check to pay for the violation. Give it up. You have nothing to prove... What is your ultimate goal by attempting to be antagonist? Jealousy? Since when did posting a cool video, with a potentially petty albeit uncertain violation, incriminate one's self? Again, live a little bit. Get out of your shell. Just because you don't have the ability to have fun of this caliber doesn't mean you need to rain on someone's parade.

I liked the video and I hope he posts more of them. I have water skied many times but have never been on a wakeboard, it looks like fun. BTW, how do you send a check to an agency for a violation that you haven't been charged with yet. Not trying to be "antagonist" with this question, I'm just curious.

I have to admit some seriuos jealousy from this keyboard right now. The skimming over the ice cubes was a nice touch!
Word of caution though, forget the legal aspects for a minute. That water is literally ice cold, even with a wetsuit you lose your strength very quickly. 2/3 years ago we waterskiied the last week of March when there was still some pockets of ice on one of the smaller lakes. We were skiiing behind a Nautique that was missing the rear transom platform as it was being refinished. An ill timed wipeout on my part put me head first into the chill. I was pretty much useless trying to get out of the water back into the boat. Between the 3 of us I was able to get pulled back in. 30 seconds in that water felt like an eternity. Had there been only the driver for one I would have been in the water considerably longer which would have made the situation that much worse. A whaler isn't that much easier to board. Have fun, but be safe. I hope to be back out there skiing this weekend although now it's with a dry suit and a transom platform!! |

I had two wetsuits on. Both are 3/2's which gave me the equivalent of a 6/4, thicker than a typical winter 5/4/3 wetsuit. I still had no plans on getting in the water.
