Auto gas tank fill neck?

I'm trying to add some additive into my gas tank.
Easy no-brainer right ? WRONG !

I suspect I am not the only one having this issue with new cars....
Car 2013 For Explorer XLT

The gas tank filler neck has a one-way cover, that opens when one inserts the gas pump nozzle. The issue I'm having is in the neck, I have discovered 2 metal tabs, one on each side, that get depressed and allows the pump nozzle to insert into the gas pipe that leads down into the tank.

I have tried using a funnel, etc but none work, because the 2 metal tabs in filler neck must be depressed simultaneously in order for one-way cover to open. I think the opening is 3/8", as half inch too small and three-quarters too big.

Ahhhhh the old days of cars, twist off the gas cap, and dump in the gas or anything else.

So, looking for suggestions......

It's obviously another way for ford to make money off you. Please buy our special funnel. I will say I had an explorer as a rental car about a year back and after I pumped the gas I stood there for three or four minutes wondering to myself if I took the cap off or not, I think it's weird how these new cars don't have the traditional screw caps.

Why are you adding anything to the gas (just curious).

Maybe HD or Lowes has a 13/16" pipe that will work?

I do add gas stabilizer when cars are not being used over the winter to the car, boat and all gas cans. I luckily haven't had this problem

Look in your cargo compartment, rear. See if you have an emergency gas nozzle nestled with the spare.

Put it in a portable can.

Check where your jack is stored. The F150s have the same type of fill neck and they come with a orange funnel in case you need to add gas in an emergency. Also I have been able to open it using my finger and then just using any funnel with a long end on it. Funnel might be located under back seat.

30.00 funnel from Ford.....Nice.....I've never seen this and don't understand even Wally Mart sells an extra long narrow funnel for like 2.00 that won't work??? Does the cap require what's put in there to be the exact size of a fuel pump? I don't get it.

From what I've read the vehicle should have one of those funnels on board and usually located with the jack.If not then here is low priced one($7) on Amazon with free shipping.

Newer vehicles nothing.

Older vehicles Carb/Injector cleaner. And/or Marvel.

Replacing an engine fuel injector can be expensive. Carbon can build up over time.

FWIW, the market has responded. Bought a bottle of Stabil yesterday. They now have extra-long necks on the bottle that reach past the filler access door.

There are some older Gilbarco Pumps that have a larger OD Nozzle and will not open the "Trap Door". There seams to be alot of these Pump in Mass.

Not sure of the Model, the story may have been on Chronicle?

Please buy our special funnel

Every Ford comes with one in the spare tire compartment. They are available in any auto supply store for a few dollars. DON'T try to force a gas can or a funnel in the filler without the adapter.

So instead of fixing a poor design issue mid production by employing better engineering, the manufacturer's solution is to throw in a cheap plastic funnel into the spare tire compartment and have the vehicle owner play hide and seek to find it. Apparently there was not sufficient market research to collaborate the efficiency and practicality of the initial design before it went into production. Amateur response........

How is it you conclude this is a poor design issue? I own a vehicle with this design and I like it. I no longer need to fumble with a filler cap, clicking it the right number of turns, etc. The no cap design is not a design flaw.

Although I will say the no cap needed may not be a bad design flaw the fact you cant fill gasoline on the fly with out a special filler is a bad design.

Sure eliminate the cap but make it work with out needing a special plastic funnel.

The funnel isn't necessary when fueling from a gas pump. It is included with vehicle for use if you ran out of gas and needed to fill tank with a jug or to use additives. I believe it's purpose is to eliminate check engine lights from when fuel cap wasn't tight.
