Default Gilford Town Beach Bans smoking

Saw this article on WMUR's website.Gilford Bans Smoking On Town Beach

POSTED: 1:38 pm EDT June 20, 2005

GILFORD, N.H. -- Gilford has banned smoking on the town beach this summer because cigarette butts have become a major litter problem.

Instead of picking up after smokers this year, lifeguards will ask them to smoke in the parking lot. Metal coffee cans will be placed on posts for smokers to use as ashtrays.

The town Parks and Recreation Department will post "No Smoking" signs on the beach, and lifeguards will give pamphlets listing beach rules to smokers.

They won't call police to handle violators. Parks officials said they expect most smokers to cooperate.

It's too bad it has come to this but smokers have brought it on themselves by being such litterbugs. All the time you see smokers flipping their butts out their car windows, into the lake and onto the ground. I guess they just can't be bothered using ashtrays or disposing of them properly. I often joke to my kids that smokers always seem to buy cars without ashtrays.

I joke about it but it is a sad situation. I can't think of any piece of trash I create that I just drop onto the ground or lake when I am done with it. Can any smoker justify this piggy behavior?

Last weeks newspaper had an article about the Philip Morris Co, which makes Marlboros, and it said that 28% of adult americans smoke cigarettes. It costs like 15 cents to make a pack of twenty cigarettes, and they sell for $7.00 in Massachusetts. A lot of their net goes to taxes and lawsuit pay-offs.

Anyway, a couple years ago, there was a bill proposed in the NH House of Reps that would have banned smoking within x number of feet from the entrance to a public building like a restaurant or hotel. It did not pass. If passed, it would have regulated smoking while outdoors, which is very unusual. It was done to curb 2nd hand smoke.

This town ordinance should be declared unconstitootional by the Supremes. It is discriminatN' to ciggy smokN' litter bugs. Like, WHAT GIVES? Gimme - a - break ! ~

Default Smoker

I am a smoker and have smoked for many years.
I always get rid of my cigarettes and trash in the proper places.
It's very easy and everyone should take just a second and not litter!
When I get to the lake, I usually rent a pontoon boat from Thurstons and I have noticed they do not have ashtrays on their boats. I do not blame them.
I wouldn't want to make someone clean up that stuff, especially if that person was a non-smoker. SO! I bring my own ashtray! A simple coffee can with some sand in the bottom of it and I tell everyone who goes along to use it and throw nothing overboard. Winni waters is not a dump!!
I bring a plastic trash bag along also.
I tell those who go with me, if I see you throw anything overboard, I will stop the boat, open up the side door and you will walk back, pick up your trash on the way!! They don't throw anything overboard.

I don't think having people smoke in the parking lot is unreasonable!
Smoking on a beach or around a group of people, that could be non-smokers, is not very curtious or polite! If I'm around people I don't know, I always ask,
Do you mind if I smoke? If they do mind, I don't smoke.
Usually you will find a place where other smokers are smoking and all is well!

It's very easy to be nice!
I don't see what the big deal is about smoking areas! At lease they are providing an area and not banning smoking all together.

Smile pigs

Please don't insult pigs by implying that they behave like humans. I know some pigs personally and they are very clean animals unlike some human beings.

Our mail delivery person is a smoker and thinks that spot underneath our mailbox is an ashtray. Gross. I feel bad for all the responsible smokers who have to take the heat for all the slobs.

CEP,

I am glad you make it clear to your visitors the proper behavior. I have been bringing buddies up to the lake for close to ten years now and have never had a problem until recently. My issue wasn't smoke tobacco but spit tobacco.

Last October we took the boat over to Meredith on a warm sunny Saturday afternoon. When we got there, there was hardly any space @ the docks. As I took the typical pass to see what I could find, a space opened up right in front of me. I had been there about 6 minutes or so and was very close to being the next in line. I made a move to the dock space because I just wasn't sure if another boat had been there first or not. He also headed for the dock and explained that I had taken his spot. Well, my friends thought they knew the way of the lake and started mouthing off to the captain of the other boat. I asked to make sure he had been there and then allowed him to take the spot. However, a few words continued to fly between the capt and my friends. He proclaimed that he had been doing this a lot longer than we had and we didn't know our stuff. Well, he was right about my friends. I then left the area and took plenty of grief from my friends.

By the end of the no wake zone, I had had enough of them telling me how to operate the boat on a lake that I have been coming to since I was 10 years old and gunned the boat. Well this caused a soda bottle that one had filled with his chew tobacco residue (disgusting habbit I know) to fall out of the cup holder and onto all over the boat. (Luckily it is an all fiberglass Whaler and not too hard to clean). Well needless to say I was pretty disappointed in my friends behavior thus far. I got pretty irritated and ordered him to hold the bottle until we got back to Winter Harbor.

About five minutes later, I look back and there is this guy (to defend myself, he was more of a friend of a friend) sitting in the back of the boat without a bottle. I just about flew off the handle. I explained that he was never welcome back at the lake and that he should probably think about finding his own way back to PA. We then turned the boat around and searched for about ten minutes for the bottle. We were unsuccessful in finding it but I made it very clear just how mad I was. All this was the day after he had told me what a special place Winnipesaukee was. I explained that it is a special place because people don't act like him and throw crap in the lake.

Anyway, a very long story I know. Sorry for the length. Just thought it provides a good example of how we can't take our guests actions for granted. I never would have thought he would throw a bottle in the lake.

Frdexplorer:

Yes! I know exactly how you feel! Very irritating when someone does something against the grain!
Fortunately, I have been blessed with friends and friends of friends that do say they love the lake and mean it! When I say I want something done on the boat, they just automatically say OK!! and do it!
Maybe it's because I'm older than they are and respect my judgment!

Well! we are getting way away from the topic of this thread and I don't want to make waves!!
I do agree with you and say, "The captain of the boat is in charge and knows the rules, hopefully!!"

BBS2: A little suggestion for your mailman! put a butt can underneath the mailbox!

Default A better suggestion...

is to tell the mailperson your mailbox area is not an ashtray and to refrain from dropping his/her cigarette butts on the ground in and around your property, please. ...and hope it works and that you still get your mail.
