One thing I've learned from doing a map: a name is what people call it, regardless of any legislation that attempts to call/spell it something else.

I possess a copy of a 1933 NH statute that "changes" the spelling of one of the 10 largest islands. Since few people spell it by its "official" name, Bizer has intentionally misspelled it the old way. Any guesses?

"In 1933, the New Hampshire Guernsey Breeders' Association organized a pilgrimage on a beautiful fall morning and some 90 Guernsey enthusiasts with their friends cruised down Lake Winnipesaukee, a distance of 18 miles, to the beautiful island, towards the eastern end of the lake with the beautiful Ossipee Mountains as background. Through the efforts of Commissioner of Agriculture Felker, Mr. Caldwell, and Mr. H.H. Blake of Concord, together with other interested friends, the ancient name of this Island, Cow Island, was changed the previous winter by the New Hampshire Legislature to Guernsey Island."

In the Library of Congress, there is a Samuel Lewis map from 1794, showing Moultonboro, spelled without the UGH. Today, the sign at the fire department building on Moultonboro Neck Road is spelled Moultonboro, without the UGH. However, in the original grant document, issued by the King of England, the UGH is there. Either spelling is acceptable.
