Hello, I am considering renting out my island camp. Do I need to notify my homeowners insurance agent? I noticed that AirBNB offers host liability insurance. Does that suffice? Any experience or info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Landlord insurance: https://www.iii.org/article/coverage...-out-your-home ..... totally excellent insurance coverage is the only way to go ..... without it ..... you should not go the rental route .... no deductible ...... as in zero deductible is always worth the extra cost.
Then ..... when you have a claim .... you get zero deducted ... and your friendly insurance company pays for everything.

Generally one of the first things any insurance agent asks when getting home owners insurance is the question > Will this be owner occupied? If not they need to know. Without letting them know that it might not always be owner occupied gives them a leg to stand on to give you nothing if something happens when or if you rent without the insurance companies knowledge.

A good umbrella liability policy in addition. It'll run about $600 for a $3mm policy.

My insurance company wouldn’t cover my island home under my umbrella policy.

My umbrella liability policy in San Francisco won't cover me in New Hampshire. I had to get another policy.

We require our renters to purchase the insurance through VRBO.
