As I sit on the porch on a beautiful day I am struck by the different way that I and others look at common sense and courtesy. A little before 7:00 a water skier went by. As the pontoon boat passed the house, Tom Petty filled the air. A few moments later a wake surfer went by and I was treated to some Bon Jovi as that boat passed.

It strikes me as odd that at such an early hour people feel the need to play their music as they enjoy watersports. It would never occur to me to do so, any more than I would sit on my deck at 7:00 and play loud music.

Did it ruin my morning? Absolutely not, nor do I think we need to ban, regulate, or fine people. Just an observation.

People seem to fail to grasp the fact that the noise travels so far on the water. When they play the music loud with the high mounted speakers they may impact people two miles away.

Many in the wake board boat crowd are especially oblivious to the problem. The design and speaker mounting which is meant to send the sound across the water is significantly different than a regular boat with a sound system designed for the people inside the boat to listen to it.

Is is possible to ride a wake board without blaring music? How about a waterproof headset for the wake board enthusiast so that only they listen to the music?

True about wakeboard boats. However, I want to be clear that the first boat I heard this morning was a pontoon boat bulling a slalom skier. So, it is not just a wakeboard boat issue.

I hear this thread SO MUCH. The other day, I took Jettie One to a small sandbar space. There was only one other boat when I got there, so I anchored out far away, played my music low, and floated in a tube...until a boat with a dozen college bros showed up, anchored within a dozen feet from the original boat, set up a beer pong table, and forced both me and the other boaters to move as they blasted rap music on a portable boombox.

I was horrified at how oblivious they were and made a comment to the original guys that either I'm getting too old or times are changing. My father would've rapped me on the beard if I was ever so careless.

Loud pipes save lives.

On the rare days that I wake to an annoyance it seems that other little annoyances linger longer throughout the day. The most days that I wake with a smile annoyances pass quickly.

For whatever reasons, folks who anchor in front of us never play loud music, and they're too far away to read the bow numbers.. With a proper telescope, I think I could read the bikini size tag. It's always "extra small". Maybe that's why I don't hear loud music? Can't multi-task.

Regrettably we’ve turned into a culture wherein people only respond to rules and regulations! Personal freedoms are the hot topic these days. So I’m in no way surprised by this. Today we are surrounded by people who prefer to be the omnipotent overlord of the island country of ME! Many have lost sight of what it means to function as part of a society. I was raised differently and raised my kids differently. Love Tom Petty but not at 7am unless he’s playing on my own headset.

With regard to Pontoons, a good tip is that you can have a 1000 watts of stereo as long as all your speakers are mounted inside and low. The boat/furniture eats up all the sound and it does not travel as far and everyone in the boat gets good sound.

It's when you start mounting external speakers (rear panel, tower, etc,) that the sound easily travels across the lake and you (we) get real annoying.

People don't realise how the sound travels across open waters. I'm in a bay and there are mornings that are very quiet and I can hear people whispering on there dock across the bay. And at my age my hearing sux's now.😂

....I have been especially cranky the last couple days, and I think it's because I am tired of the extra volume of day boaters, day trippers, and other yahoos that have been coming here all summer. I totally get it...people were cooped up for a couple months, and can't, (or don't want to), go on a big vaca, so they make a day trip or weekend trip to the lakes region. It's also a tourist economy here and the region needs vacationers. However, that's not an excuse for being a sh**head. On Sunday, I was heading up the hill going towards Laconia by Lovering Volvo and there was a steady line of traffic coming down the hill into Meredith. Mr and Miss Jackass, (with out-of-state plates), gun it from the street next to the car wash out onto Rte 3 heading toward Meredith. The driver and his lady friend both gave the finger simultaneously to me and the car coming down the hill as he cut us both off. Seriously?? And the nonsense I've seen on the lake this summer, as others have written, is even worse. I am truly amazed that there have not been any serious accidents or injuries on the water over the last couple months.

Just a couple more weeks....I am really looking forward to September!

Fully agree with you. The wife and I are into counting out of state plates as we attempt to go about our daily lives. Believe it will be into September as individuals are still working from home.

Correct - and most larger companies / Universities are a return by mid-September at best, and are being told to prepare to revisit back to work dates at some point in 2021.

And don't forget every local property is being scooped up immediately at any price by people that will now have a home here. The surge is coming, it's not going to recede when the weather turns cold as it has in the past Get used to it.

Those are just the Catholic/Christian schools offering discounts mainly because new enrollment was low. Schools like Brewster New Hampton Tilton Holderness etc are not offering any new student discounts. I know this first hand as my son was accepted to most as a freshman this year and we decided on New Hampton. Non offer any discount what so ever.

Point was incentives are everywhere, from Catholic schools tossing a couple thousand out there to 32 new Condo's @ Bartons going up for 665-775k. Those aren't going to NH people.....

So counting down to September waiting for the out of state plates to go away isn't going to happen - there is an influx coming. You see it right now and think it's just summer folks day-tripping, but it's not....go ask a realtor who's buying these houses

Channel for an hour. Many inconsiderate people, some on jet skis, passing by with very loud music.

While you are there you can enjoy the loudspeaker system at Thurston's. "Parts, you have a call holding on line 2". Their speakers are aimed off their property across the Channel. They were asked years ago to just turn the speakers around so they aimed into their property instead of off of their property and they refused to make any changes.

Too many people with self centered attitudes and no consideration for others.

THAT being said, today at West Alton sandbar, some boat was playing music WAYYYY too loudly. It was a quiet early afternoon until a black pontoon pulled up and, and I mean this literally, played music so loud that even 100' away I could hardly hear my guests. We had to move. So obnoxious.

Did you ask them to turn it down? Some people actrally respond to such requests. Sounds like they are disturbing the peace. Maybe not enough for a fine, but perhaps enough for MP to get them to turn down the volume. Lots of other options, none legal, I guess.

A couple boats near them made an issue of it, and they actually turned it up louder for a while. When they turned it back "down," it was as loud as before.

When we got off-axis and behind the line of boats between us and them, it wasn't as bad, but the people behind them and the houses on shore were majorly disrupted.

I concur with many observations expressed in this thread but one thing I disagree with is the frequent pointing of fingers at 'out-of-staters'. I spend five months each year at our home on Lake Winni and seven months in CT. So, I guess that makes me one of those out-of-staters - identified I suppose by my CT license plates or by my 'poor behavior'. To some it seems, the 'in-stater' can do no wrong. Despite my label, I do my best to be respectful of others whether on or off the lake, in CT or NH - wherever. Of course, like everyone, I'm not immune to making mistakes or executing poor judgment and when I do, it probably irritates someone. But what makes some think that 'in-staters' are any better than 'out-of-staters'?

One problem, as JDarby points out above, is the USA has become a country of 'me'. A good percentage of us have become so insular - technologically, politically, socially, geographically - that we've stopped caring for one another. So, we flip the bird instead of waving. We blame others and fail to admit our own mistakes. Our opinions are the only ones that matter. We don't listen. We lack tolerance. We fail to trust others. Our frustration begets anger rather than forgiveness. All of this manifests itself in our daily activities be it driving a car, piloting a boat, dining in a restaurant, judging the actions of our neighbors, failing to be cognizant of our own behaviors and, yes, participating in the Lake Winnipesaukee Forum.

Folks, this isn't restricted to 'out-of-staters'. This is the new American way.

You know why? The infrastructure is not set up for this many people. Even the lake. It is just too many people for the area. Locals are not used to waiting in line to get into town and taking 10 minutes to get through town. It works for a couple of months but I know lots of people who have a hard time dealing with it even for a short time.

On the whole, I agree, but I do think there's a distinct difference between how locals take care of "their" resources vs. out-of-towners.

Merrimack and Milford have had to shut down town parks because of the influx of MA people these last six months. How do we know MA? Video and photos from local residents (yes, it got that bad).

Merrimack is dealing with a second park issue, and last Saturday, all but ~dozen (people are now tracking) users throughout the day were from MA (three from CT, one from RI and NY) and the park was destroyed at the end of the day. So much so that the town removed ALL picnic tables Sunday.

I just think there's a vested interest in locals, who pay taxes and are around all the time, to keep things clean/usable. Not entirely, of course, but enough that a claim can be made.

Without a scientific study it is hard to apportion greater rudeness to out of staters.

Thus we are left with our own observations.

I think that people who have a hellish commute to work drive more aggressively than others.

There are plenty of rude drivers to be found.

When it's a green plate, one might mutter "rude" under one's breath.

When it's a red and white plate, the same rude conduct receives an extra label that begins with "Mass".

While many might say that there are far more red plate events, it could be that they are just better remembered.

Perhaps I can get some Covid money to study this.

You make a very valid point. We moved to NH permanently in mid 2019. Prior to that, both my wife and I were MA natives, with the exception of 7 yrs in southwest CT. We have had a place on the lake since Gerald Ford was President. There were numerous times in those 40 years that our MA or CT license plates caused some locals to turn into lunatics. One person once followed us to the grocery store and then verbally berated us from their car that we were coming here to ruin the state. I kid you not. Of course the vast majority of out-of-state visitors or part-time residents love the area and are completely respectful to everyone and everything. But it's pretty obvious to me that in our current Corona situation, there is a HUGE increase in volume of day-trippers and day-boaters, and many of them are here just for their short-term gratification and don't care about anyone or anything else.

It's so true, it depends on the people. There are lots of wonderful people who come here but there are some who aren't wonderful. I feel it has changed a lot over the years. An example is in another current thread here where the discussion is about people feeling entitled to sit right in front of somebody's house saying they have the right because everybody owns the lake. It's true they have the right but is it considerate? I think it is this type of "entitled" person who frustrates the NH people.

Consider making NH your primary residence. Get those nice NH Moose plates, probably cheaper car insurance, and no state income tax. Buy your car in NH, register it here, and no sales tax. If you vote like most CT folks, tax and spend, please leave that bad habit in CT.

I just might do that one day, but then, I'd just be ostracized in CT instead. It's not just here where this phenomenon is experienced. It's no different along some of the CT shore line towns when they are invaded by New Yorkers each summer.

I assume I'd need to live here six months plus a day each year in order to make that change???

I know when I'm in someone else's space whether I'm there legally or not. I could never drop anchor in a place like that and feel comfortable. As someone else implied in another thread, it's a big lake with plenty of places to go without being in someone's face.

I would not consider it an attack. When you post on a public forum sometimes everyone reading your post will not agree with your point of view. If you are sensitive or offended by opinions that do not agree with yours maybe a public forum is not a place you should express them.

Actually Meredith also gave examples of how locals treated him when he was an evil out of stater. Examples like his happen all the time to us folk who are only 40% local (or anyone with an out of state plate). You left that part out.

It seems like most of the new residents in my neighborhood are from NY and Conn. They are looking to retire and get away from the city and high taxes. If you think Winni was crazy this summer, the next few years will be much worse.

Agree. Guessing the Hamptons and Cape are no longer a option for most. Will we have to cash out and find a new retirement area? Maybe, north of the notch.

It was then I realized I was hearing an automatic electric bailer!
