Question found man's Apple wristwatch, Mad River Trail, Waterville Valley, Aug 9th

Found 10-am, Friday, August 9, Waterville Valley on the Mad River Trail close to the west branch of the Mad River, along the Water Dept service road ...... a large black rectangular functioning Apple wristwatch on a black rubber watch band.

This large black Apple wristwatch has more USELESS technology than anyone could ever need but will be happy to mail it back to you, the owner, wherever you are! .....

If it is the GPS version (with a red circle on the crown), it also has incredibly useful tech. Your hiking friend, just for example--could have "backtracked" to his starting point had he been lost, called 911 in an emergency, had EMT help arrive automatically if he had fallen, monitored his heart rate. Super good for an old guy like you.

I mocked the watch for years before being "forced" to buy one to monitor my exercise, now I love it. You might do a bit of Googling to see if a found watch can be reset for a new user. If yes, buy a charger and give it a go, or give it to a young relative. Note that when you plug it it, you may receive a message from the owner, and it may activate a homing signal. If that happens, you can return it to the guy and ask him to pay for the charger

Yeah, if AW batteries lasted long enough to get all that data. I had no idea most only lasted a day until a few hikes ago when my friend's died a mile from the trailhead...and my Garmin had 85% left. AW = criminal.

My son has a Garmin, it's terrific. Much better for a multi-day trek. But as a person who charges daily, I would not trade the extra features of the Apple Watch for the extra battery life. Vive la difference, non?

Fair enough. It's just such a crazy difference—my friends can't even use their sleep-tracking apps or complete a whole hike, and that's when new. Weird.

I'm glad you like yours, though!

I love my Apple Watch. I use it to monitor walks and paddling and with its gps I can see a map of where I've been along with time and distance. I also have a sleep app which keeps track of my length and levels of sleep. I also use the music app and iHeart a lot. Can't live without it.

Yeah, the sleep tracking is screwy--you have to charge it after dinner/before bed. Kind of a PIA. I don't use sleep tracking, so it's easy to charge on nightstand next to phone.

It should last plenty long for a day hike, especially if your friend has his iPhone with him. Definitely not two days though

I’m too cheap to buy an AW. My wife got me a $49 knock off that does most of what AW does ( as long as it is within 20 ft of my phone. I can make and receive calls but don’t use it for this or to send texts. Can’t figure how to get my big fingers hitting those tiny buttons. It definitely has me taking more interest in exercise (take more steps this week than last) and my sleep time. Charge it and it is good for 5 to 8 days.
