Default Walmart - Computer Glitch

This could apply to all in the Lakes Region.

This may be a one time mistake. Or a Walmart computer glitch.

Ordered online item from Walmart. Was charged a sales tax.
Went to different browsers just to make sure it was not a browser issue.

I won't get into the Amazon hack. That is for another post.

Best to read all charges when ordering online. Intentional or a software glitch.

If this is a software glitch at Walmart. Walmart is making a lot of extra money from folks in New Hampshire.

No, Walmart is not my first choice to buy anything. Nor is Amazon.
But sometimes some items are difficult to find at other web sellers.

Walmart by telephone refunded me the sales tax fee.

Note. If any incorrect spelliing found. My eyesight has issues.

Default ...... a 50%-off secret sale!

Hey, it pays to shop around, and competition is what makes America great.

On Sunday Oct 20, the Lowe's in Tilton had a number of large handwritten signs in their outdoor garden area saying all plants and shrubs are 50% off. Picked up two very nice outdoors blueberry plants for !4.99-ea, reg 29.99.

About one hour later at the Lowe's in Gilford there were no signs for 50%-off in their Gilford outdoor garden area. So, I mentioned this Tilton 50%-off to the garden area cashier and asked so why not in Gilford? She says she has a 50% off button on the cash register that she would use.

So in Gilford it apparently was a 50%-off secret sale while it was a 50%-off signed sale in Tilton. Different strokes for different management folks, Tilton vs. Gilford.

Pssstttttt ....... it was a 50%-off secret sale, but don't tell anyone, it is a secret.

I have been a customer of Cameron Hughes for many years. For those that aren't familiar with CH, they buy up excess wine inventory from many of the top vineyards and then sell it online at a large discount under their own name, (e.g., you can get a $100 cabernet for around $25-$30, or a $50 chardonnay for around $15).

When I first started having it shipped to NH, the order contained a "sales tax". I phoned Cameron Hughes and asked what was going on, as NH does not have a sales tax. They indicated that although NH does not have a sales tax, the state does impose an 8% mark-up fee to the shipper, (CH, in this case), for wine shipped directly to the customer. CH passes that on to the customer and it shows up on their order system as a "sales tax".

This exact same fee exactly as described, was charged to me last year when I purchased a few bottles of wine from a winery in California.

FWIW, Naked Wines does the same thing, so that does lead to some cred.

Just another thought that could be the culprit - Make sure you aren't connected through a VPN that's going through another state that does have Sales Tax (or other fees). If so, it might be triggering the tax that way via your browser location which might be defined as your VPN...

On the contrary, a VPN works great when traveling abroad for YouTube TV

shippers are required to charge NH tax. Likely due to the monopoly the state has on wine

Good point. Thanks.

Walmart did. Yet Amazon and Home Depot - no issues.

From the web:

"A VPN (Virtual Private Network) does not directly affect sales tax; while you might connect to a server in a different location using a VPN, your actual location and the state where the purchase is made still determines the sales tax you owe, meaning using a VPN to try and avoid sales tax is generally ineffective and could be considered tax evasion in certain situations."

However, as stated above...buying out of state spirits is a different matter...

"The New Hampshire State Liquor Commission permits spirits, wine and beer to be shipped into New Hampshire so long as the direct shipper has obtained a permit from the Commission. The permit allows out of state companies to ship alcoholic beverages to citizens."

It would seem that permit is the issue on taxation?

Arrow Walmart-Plymouth NH to the rescue!

The Plymouth Walmart did one hell of a good job with my customer return.

Changed my mind from Rit Dye denim blue to Rit Dye royal blue for reviving an oldie but a goody, Chuck Stearns waterski pfd vest, threw out the receipt, but the Walmart returns could process my return via my debit card and refunded my $3.67 in cash to me which I turned around and bought Super Tech carburetor cleaner aerosol spray for the snowblower.

Walmart-Plymouth NH has all the angles covered. ......
