We haven't read anything in the local paper about Sawyers in several months. The last we read, the brothers who own it said they have a price in mind that they would sell for, but if they don't receive a suitable offer they will continue to run it into the foreseeable future.

The for sale sign is still there, I had heard that there was interest from a gas station/convenience store.

good chance to bring in some foreigners to run it. Maybe they will eventually get a green card. Will be a shame to have gasoline instead of banana ice cream, their ought to be a law. Someone get the legislature on this instead of on boat speed. Now if sawyers were closer to the lake maybe that would be a cause to speed.

My understanding was that Irving was the interested party. I haven't been able to confrim that, but I hope it isn't true. What a negative change to the landscape/business-scape that would be!!

There was an article last year in one of the local papers. The owners said they only wanted to sell to people who would continue the business.
So based on my memory of that article, that's their desire. I'm not sure that they won't cave in, if the place doesn't sell or someone offers them a ton of money for the place. A seasonal restaurant is probably not the most profitable use for that site. A gas station may face other hurdles if the fight over the Crossroads site is any indicator. Last year a gas station plan for that spot was quashed for environmental concerns. |

Well, the crossroads location may have been a little much. Theres what, MAYBE a few hundred of us there during the winter? So yeah, we need 2 gas stations. Across the street from each other no less. I know it would be busy during the summer, but still, its 5 minutes to the Gilford Mobile. Now if Sawyers is a gas station, thats another one 5 minutes up the road....
Man I hope they stay open as Sawyers. Or maybe Waldo Peppers II? ![]()

My point on Crossroads was simply that anytime you mix gasoline and water you have an environmental issue. Sawyer's is pretty close to the little stream that leads to Saunders Bay. Any oil company would have to consider the cost of a legal fight to place a gas station there. That makes the spot less valuable.
Very few places in this country "need" another gas station, but that alone doesn't mean it's not good business to build one. Personally, I hope something happens. The current owners don't seem to have their heart in the place anymore. As someone who grew up in that business, unless you love it, it's can be exhausting miserable work. |

I seem to remember a Citizen article around Sept saying a wetlands problem quashed the Irving deal. They (Sawyers) did make the comment of only wanting to sell to someone who would keep it much the same as it is. There was someone (name escapes me right now) who expressed intrested, plans remained for a seasonal operation but maybe open a few weeks longer. Sound familiar to anyone? Any help here?

What a very foolish response about foreigners. I recall that was someone from Conn. I was raised here and you my dear also are known as a foreigner so untill you'r a resident you should probally just keep those comments to yourself.

Recently. Cumberland Farms has been running large poltical ads in the Laconia Daily Sun trying to educate Gilford voters as to why they should vote down a Gilford zoning change that will protect the Gilford underground water aquifer from possible gasoline leakage from underground gasoline storage tanks. I do not know all the specifics and ins & outs of this bill and there are plenty. Doesn't it go to a vote on next tuesday March 14 as a question for the Gilford voters? Cumberland Farms has purchased a property close to Kar Kraft, Gilford Well & Gilford Wal-Mart for use as a Cumby store & gasoline. This new Cumby property is directly across from the new and not yet built Hannaford's and Lowe's. Cumberland Farms owns Gulf Gasoline. Apparently, the proposed Gilford water aquifer protection zoning change would put a big STOP to their gasoline plans.
Having once tasted a mouthfull of gasoline while syphening gas out of a Honda 350 motorcycle, about 35 years ago, I well remember that gasoline tastes incredibly TERRIBLE. It is so bad and causes severe and very strong reactions and takes maybe one hour of gargling milk to eliminate the gasoline taste, as I recall. Maybe, the Sawyer's location is also within the proposed Gilford water aquifer protection area? Already, there are at least three large gas stations on that busy commercial street, NH Route 11C, the huge Mobil, a Sunoco, and a Getty. How many more gas stations does that area really need, anyway! Last edited by fatlazyless; 03-09-2006 at 08:52 AM. Reason: edit |

FLL - I think you may be precisely on target with your guess that the Sawyers location is also in very close proximity to that Aquifer. I recall (somewhat fuzzily) a bit of buzz over the winter which indicated that property could not be utilized for any fueling.
I also recall reading that the Sawyer family really did not wish to sell unless the buyer intended to continue with current use, and BRAVO to the Sawyers for that! ![]() I would truly hate to see that property change in any way - Sawyers is an institution, and visiting there is a summer ritual for thousands. Besides - their ice cream is divine! ![]() ![]()
