Default First Sign of Ice

Driving by Gilford Yacht Club today, there was a definite skim of ice across all the boat slips! Didn’t think the water was cold enough yet for ice to form but looks like I was wrong.

With the expected single digit cold weather happening at night the end of this week, we should see more ice forming elsewhere. Who knows maybe an early ice in this year?….one could only hope!

Default First signs of ice

The Back Bay area in Wolfeboro (under the bridge and into the waterski area) has seen ice for several days, nothing substantial, but enough to let you know the real thing can't be too far behind. Personally, with all due apologies to you ice fishermen (& women) - May First can't get here soon enough!
By the way, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year along the way.

Arrow Zip-on studded tire treads for e-biking the frozen lake ice

Riding down the 1.65-mile of sidewalk along Union Ave on an e-bike, from the CVS in Gilford/Laconia to the Lakeport Landing Marina, Elm St in Laconia has become very happening and a very everyday thing-to-do.

For riding an e-bike out on the frozen lake ice, or on that Union Ave sidewalk when it gets iced .... http://www.core77.com/posts/81335/A-...ff-Tire-Treads ...... there's a zip-on studded tire tread for turning your e-bike into an ice e-bike.

"A bike invention from Norway; zip-on, zip-off tire treads."

Early would need a historical context.
Maybe earlier than recently.

There’s also a good amount of ice in Pickerel Cove.

Well in 2018 ice in was declared on January 3rd. That’s as early as I can remember. Doubt we will see that but who knows…I’ll take anything in early January!

Question ....... vinyl tips?

You know it's at least a month till some unknown day in January before the Lake Winnipesaukee ice is safe enough for walking on it. The Winni Marine live feed, Weirs Channel water temp page says the Lake Winnipesaukee water temp is right now about 41 to 42 degrees, and it needs to drop to below 34-degrees to freeze on the top of the lake water.

Here's the place to go ...... www.plymouth.edu/campus-life/ice-arena ...... Route 93 - Exit 25, for recreational ice skating where you can rent skates and practice your ice skating.

What works incredibly good to support beginner ice skaters is a second hand ambulatory care walker. Remove the four rubber tips and replace them with similar tips made with VINYL and these VINYL tips glide incredibly good over the ice. Heath's Hdwe, Center Harbor is the only hardware store that has these VINYL white or black tips or cups and they cost about 4/$3.99. For some unknown reason, vinyl cups will glide across the ice much smoother and faster with less friction than rubber cups/tips.

If you see some old guy with an ambulatory care walker covered with foam noodles and vinyl tips, plus wearing a foam noodle waist belt while ice-skating around mega-multi-million-dollar Governor's Island, that is definitely NOT me ...... .

I'm not sure when they started to declare the Ice-in.
But I seem to remember - and it may just be age on my part - that in the 70s, November seemed a lot colder on average.

When I was a kid, we were snowmobiling New Years Day across the Broads. I don't think that we will see anything like those days in any near future.
Those were the good old days when ice was around for the entire winter and not just a couple weeks. Miss those days

I can remember having my Bob house on the ice in front of Lake Shore Park on January 1st. This would have been around 1979-1980 + or - Yup, the good old days!

As we reminisce about the ice of days gone by I am reminded of the thunderstorms that pummeled our neighborhood during my formative years.

We were poor then, so much so that after the storm the rainbow was black and white!

Default where's the ice?

I thought for sure that with the sub-freezing night and day time temps we have had the past few days... we would have ice and I'd be walking to the island today instead of commuting by boat... maybe tonight???

Default today...

54 degrees, pouring rain, and 30mph winds were not very helpful in ice development today...

The weather in the next couple of weeks looks better but with a pretty much constant wind...

I'm waiting -PIG

My neighbor was out on Twentymile Bay about [emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]] yards from shore, reported [emoji6]” ice thickness.
