Weirs Beach sign; how old?

One good sign can do a lot for a business, and this Weirs Beach sign has done a lot to identify and promote Weirs Beach. Installed on Saturday, July 21, 1956 by a group of local businessmen led by Sid Ames, this sign is looking good and doing its thing for almost 70 years.

The original 1956 sign had an apostrophe after the "s" in Weirs that was dropped from the new sign because it was considered too confusing to be grammatically correct so why bother with an apostrophe.

Hence, no apostrophe on the new sign but it really should have an apostrophe after the "s" in Weirs.

Meredith overtook the Weirs quite easily as a tourist location without any neon sign.

I disagree, FLL, I think it’s grammatically correct without the apostrophe.

I didn't see anything above about the origin of the name, and it's impossible to know if it's grammatically correct without that. If, for example, the beach/area was named after James Weir, then "Weir's Beach" would be grammatically correct.

This website, however, says the origin comes from the word for Native American fishing traps used in that area: "Weir(s)."

If that is accurate, the apostrophe should never have been used as the "s" indicates plurality, not ownership.

What this history of Weirs Beach does not include is by 1695 all the remaining indigenous native people living in the waterfront village were evicted and run off their land, there. They escaped to the Saco River in what is now Fryeburg, Maine, to an area along the river that is now a youth summer camp, Camp Indian Acres.
