Question Staying safe

Hi folks...Does anyone have any practical philosophies, recommendations or experiences to share on keeping properties and home sites safe from break-ins or vandalism during the cold months? Thanks so much.

We're fortunate enough to have our next door neighbor who lives there full time. We've become friendly with him and he has our emails and all our other contact info in case. He has had to call about a few things and we're so fortunate. Other times if it's not something major he'll just send off and email to make sure. I guess my advice would be if you have any full time neighbors, get friendly with them! They are worth their weight in gold..at least ours is.

Peechee:

Do you think that breakins are a big problem? Fortunately, I haven't heard of many problems recently.

This past Saturday, there was a Triggs Island break-in reported to Wolfeboro Police Department. (Lake Wentworth).

My neighbor had one in 2004, and a friend on the opposite shore had one in the previous year. Both had glass in one window broken out. (With snowmobile tracks present in the latter case).

The police taking his report said there were a hundred break-ins in the town in 2003, and handed him a burglar-alarm installer's card.

Default break-ins

I agree with Kona Chick , there's nothing like a good neighbor!
We are also fortunate to have our neighbor live there year-round. He e-mails up periodically with the all clear signal. We used to have an alarm with Winni Security. It also monitored the house temp, if it got below 40F they called us. They were wicked nice too.

Some neighborhoods/associations may have a person who will swing by your home and check it every so often for a fee. My family does in Suissevale checking water and heat in the winter is worth the money alone. Not really much you can do for a home not occupied some of the year. People will learn your schedule and who's there and when, that goes for all homes in your area. A presence there is the best defense but if your not there your just not there.

Default thieves

If you want some insight into the minds of thieves and their methodologies, watch It Takes a Thief on the Discovery Channel.
Freaked me out and made us think about security in a different way. We even bought a safe as a Valentine's present to each other!!

Angry thieves

Another thing that works quite well is, have some stickers made up to put on your windows and doors that say,

"INSURED BY HOWITZER"

Love,
T.

Default Home Monitoring System

I use a home monitoring system that has wireless temperature, water, and door and window sensors, as well as wireless cameras with motion sensors. If anything out of the my specified parameters occurs I get an email sent to my computer and to my cell phone. If there is a break in or a contractor shows up I receive a picture of whoever set off the motion sensor. The down side is that you need to have broadband, but since I do anyway there is no added expense once I purchased the system. The starter kit is only a few hundred dollars and can be purchased at CompUSA. Setup is easy, USB plug and play. You can then buy additional sensors or cameras has your needs require. One thing they lack is the ability to view the cameras real time, but I have other cameras for that. Here is a link for more info.
