When I was growing up, I recall my parents taking me a ski hill (maybe) that had a skeleton type run during the summers. I believe that place has been shut down for years but does anyone know of something like this that still operates aroun winnie?

I believe you are remembering Mount Whittier in West Ossipee. They closed in 1985, or so. It was a smaller, but fun mountain. Around the late 70's, or very early 80's, they installed a winding track that supported these little vehicles that rolled down the hill. They really got going. They also had a water park in the summer in their late years.
There is a web site that covers old ski areas that I do not have the address of, but I think you can find it. I am not aware of anything like that today in the lakes region. A lot of the ski mountains have gone to mountain bike runs in the summer. You go up on the lift and it is all down hill from there. R2B |

Thanks Resident 2B! All I could remember was that is was similar to skelton, but I couldnt find anything on google. Once I used 'Alpine Slide' again I found that Attitash still has one in operation. Boy, I sure do remember those little things would get lots of speed! Cant wait to take my kids up this summer.

...I think you are referring to MT. ROWE...It is/was a small ski hill on the (old) exit road of GUNSTOCK...They had an ALPINE SLIDE years ago...The web site you are referring to deals with "extinct" ski areas...You can link to it through snow journal...If I remember the actual website I will add it...BTW...Did you know there was pretty good ski hill at what is now Soleil/Brickyard..??..

Check out
http://www.nelsap.org/ I think you will find it very interesting. The old Mt Rowe ski area, next to Gunstock use to have an Alpine slide similar to Mt Whittier and Attitash. Perhaps that may be the place.

Gunstock had an Alpine slide too. My kids were pre-teens when we went. My Mom decided she would try it. Oh boy, a near suicide mission

This was a postcard posted by Al Skipper of the Sea Que
and he said, (and I quote) " This was a thrilling ride for many years. Winter it was a ski slope, in summer they put in two, 3/4 mile "cement troughs" or tracks. You would take a nice ride up the mountain on the ski lift. Pick up a plastic sled at the top and take a short walk to the start of the track. The first few years we were able to got some exciting speed on those things (some riders lost control). They later added runners to the sleds to increase drag and SLOW them down a bit. Some years later they added a few water park type slides to the Alpine Ridge attraction." ![]() and here's another one! ![]() and here's the link to the NELSAP page ALPINE RIDGE ![]() |

Boy was the one at Gunstock just a ton of fun. Don't put your hand on the side of the sled though!
