Question Old Dance Hall In Center Harbor?

Hey all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this (although I know it's the most viewed), but I'm looking for any information regarding a dance hall that used to be in Centre Harbor.

My grandparents met there a very long time ago. He was born in 1897 so I figure I'm looking at a time frame between 1915 and 1930.

As some of you know, I'm getting married in August and while she obviously knows about it (we've been planning it since last July) we're not "technically" engaged yet.

So I want to do it next weekend in the spot that used to be the dance hall.

I was originally going to do it at St. John's on Bear (where we have a place) but couldn't afford the ring in the warmer months.

But I think this idea is kind of special too.

So any info would be greatly appreciated. And to the women on this site, do you think my idea is unique and/or romantic?

Jk

Default Don't know if this will help

Check this webpage.... maybe some information that would help.. the article mentions an old "band stand" from the late 1800's.

Red face Thanks SteveA

It's funny that you should mention the bandstand; when I was told growing up that my grandparents met at a dance in Centre Harbor, it was always the bandstand that I pictured in my mind because I never knew where the actual dance took place.

Thanks for your help. If I can't find the exact spot, I've already decided to use the bandstand as the proposal site.

Anyone else out there that can help me?

McDude...

Upthesaukee...

Anyone...

Smile thinking of old Irwin Gardens at Weirs...

Hope you find the elusive dance hall...and wed there! I wonder too if enough folks pay attention to the old Irwin Gardens at Weirs, site of incredible performances of dance bands and assorted stars. I went on a pilgrimage last summer to see the old maple dance floor, still happily intact. Tiered band stand also lurks behind the games...Have a good winter everyone!

Sorry....don't know much about Center Harbor. If there was a dance hall it may have been in the Garnet Inn (no longer there)...the photos seem to show a park across the street. Perhaps there was a bandstand there?

Good Luck!

Default Garnet Inn

Sorry, both buildings are gone as well as Nichol's which was a sundries store that sold penny candy out of a glass case at that corner. Nichols' memorial Library is still across the street.

No worries Peechee, her luster isn't lost on a lot of us, even those like me too young to remember the Garden. One of my favorite times of year is my neighbors "Irwin Gardens" bikeweek stories.
