Not that anyone wants it but it looks like there may be some more snow tonight and tomorrow!!??

Yew Haw! Keep it all up north! Us southerners are enjoying spring and no snow. In fact, the Cherry trees have been in flower for a few days, the Daffodils are up and it is crazy time if you work in the green industry. Not to rub it in any but GOOD BYE WINTER- with love from sunny Pennsylvania.

A winter storm watch is now in effect for tonight and tomorrow for the southern half of New Hampshire including Belknap County. According to the National Weather Service in Gray Maine, we can expect the watch to be upgraded to warnings and advisories this afternoon as the storm becomes more of a certainty.

A cold front crossing New England today from NW to SE is expected to stall and become stationary along a line from the Ohio River Valley to around Cape Cod. This boundary between air masses will serve as a track for several small waves of low pressure (storms) moving from the Kentucky/West Va. area to the east.

With the storm track positioned to our south, the greatest chance of warning-level snow (6"+) will be in the southern half of the state. Snow advisories (for all snow) or winter weather advisories (for mixed precip) will be issued for counties that are not expected to receive 6 inches or more.

For the snow-weary, take heart: The sun at this time of year limits snow's ability to accumulate during daylight hours. It also means a good shoveling job isn't really necessary because even large accumulations melt quickly at this time of year (except for the frozen-solid stuff that's been with us since December.)

For those of us to the south of New England... radar indicates snow currently falling in northern Pennsylvania, which is expected to affect a large part of southern NY state and into western Massachusetts the rest of today.

The NWS just upgraded its watch to a warning for the entire lakes region, southern White Mountains, and southern NH.

To find out how much has fallen during the storm go to the Winnipesaukee WeatherCenter page and click on 'rain & snow amounts' in the menu. There you will also find a snow depth map for all of New England and NY state.

So far at Black Cat we have 2.5 inches. This brings the month total to 12.2 inches which compares to a March total of 18.3 inches last year. This March has so far been less snowy than April of last year, which had 14.0 inches.

To all who have seen enough snow, I would be amazed if this April was as snowy as last April. The reason for our record snowfall this winter has been a lot of small-to-medium storms that happened while the weather was cold enough for snow, but our overall temps have been warmer this winter than last. That is the reason the snow had so much liquid content in it, allowing it to collapse the roofs (seriously... blame the warm air!) Had this winter been as cold as last, our storms this winter would've been mostly powder. We would've had more of it (fluff factor) but it would've had a hard time staying on the roofs once the wind picked up.

So, while the warm air this winter has killed us in terms of wet snow, I would now expect the warmth to prevent this April from being nearly as snowy as last. April 2007's "showers" turned to snow because the cold air was so well-anchored here. I don't think that will happen this year.

WMUR is trying to get the word out that the ski mountains are staying open later this year and hoping people don't put their skis away because its spring. Actually, April has some of the best skiing I've ever had in this state... warm enough so you can ski in lightweight clothing (or even T-shirt) and soft snow.

Snow at Black Cat is now up to 3.1 inches. Radar indicates one final band of snow pushing through here and the back edge is at the CT river. Another band may throw a few flurries at us toward morning but doesn't look like much on the radar screen.

While the black cat weather cam says the tempereature is now 20.1 degrees, the temperature just 25 miles north in Waterville Valley is, at the same time, all of 3 degrees. The elevation here is about 1500', on the valley floor.

Yesterday, there were snowmobiles out of the frozen lake, and the snowy surface looked very good with lots of traction. Ice was building in ice- eater openings close to docks. It looked like February. Probably yesterday was the last real-feel day of the winter as a big warm-up is predicted.

We had almost a foot of snow at my house at Cannon Mt Friday/Friday night.Temps near zero at 2000 ft elevation.Windchills below zero on saturday morning.More like January.Sunday was the nicest day of the season so far.Spectacular bluebird dead calm yum yum.Today(Monday) it's snowing in southern NH and will be 60 tomorrow.The weather is so diverse in NH.

Snow began just after 10 this morning. See the time lapse movie of this morning's sunrise yeilding to yet more snow (3 hours is covered in about 50 seconds.)

This snow is part of a warm front that is crossing the area today. Radar indicates the back edge of the snow has just crossed the CT river and moving east... so we'll be done with the snow soon. About an inch has accumulated. Like most snow at this time of year, it's melting as it falls except when it falls heavily, because of the high sun angle and lots of solar radiation coming through the clouds.

Behind the warm front, expect the warmup to begin... temps may reach 60 tomorrow across the lakes region, and should remain in the 40s for the rest of the week. This will speed the melting process, so watch out downstream!
