What Idiots Placed Schools on Busy State Roads

Whose bright idea was to place both schools on Route 25?
Of all the land available in these Lakes Region Towns, they put a school on a busy state roadway.

Meredith now has two entranceways off Route 25. Now 2 police officers are needed with two police cars with flashing lights at school times.
Traffic backed up from lights in Meredith to the schools.

Moultonborough with the 100 acres of land that the schools own builds a school on state road Route 25. A 2nd police officer is needed at school bus times as so much traffic.

What idiots proposed the location of that school?

They place schools and public buildings where there is convenient roadway access. Just because we have the “high holy” tourist season, it doesn’t mean that the remaining 9 months of the year should dictate placement of public buildings

was a factor when they were deciding what was easiest for residents the other 179 days they have to go there. I can’t think of a school anywhere that’s on an old back road come to think of it.

I somewhat agree with professor. Not well planned and a public safety issue when a crisis erupts and police and fire are obstructed getting to where they need to but also realize these roads were design eons ago when traffic was minimal and most families had one car :-)

Fifteen years ago, I was surprised to see a school bus on Wolfeboro's Forest Road. The entrance to Camp Wyanoke (closed in 1978) still remains on Forest Road—and is still marked as such.

Back then, Forest Road was a three mile ride through a dark green tube that dead-ended at Camp Ossipee—established in 1875—and The Wolfeboro Airpark (1948). Other than trees, the only place you could see hills or open sky was at Carry Beach!

Camp Wyanoke's campers are having a reunion starting Friday, July 27, 2018. When seeing a school bus on Forest Road, wait 'til you see their reaction!

I do not know how many extra police cruisers Meredith has. Like most police departments I assume they have a couple of extra cars for replacements when the primary cars are down for service or when special situations exist that require more patrols.

All police departments have to be ready to increase staffing by calling in additional officers when significant incidents such as fatal accidents or major crimes occur that tie up the regular patrols.

I am questioning the assertion above that the officers that direct traffic on a daily basis in front of the schools are there on overtime. I am pretty sure it is just regular patrols that go there unless they are tied up on another call.

Route 25-B is an alternate route to circle around a congested Rt 25 on high school hill. Enroute, do yourself a favor, and stop in to Heath's Super Market for a totally free cup of Vermont Coffee Roaster's coffee in five different flavors ..... like the Lake & Lodge dark roast ....... a courtesy cup ......no charge.....check out the still yummy but date expired, reduced price, home made baked goods like donuts, muffins, & whoopie pies.......on the little metal rack in the back of the store ..... and chill out with the very scenic 4-mile drive up and down Dane Hill Road ....... aka State Route 25-B.

Our town has a few retired folks who direct traffic at schools and busy commuting intersections. Once in a while, one of them has to take a day off, and a regular patrol officer fills in, but otherwise, these are folks working a couple of hours five days a week. No overtime, minimal benefits. Summers and school vacations, off.

Some Mass residents could be overly sensitive to this because of the endless cases of massive overtime abuse in our state that we're now learning about. The overtime abuse was widespread and systemic. These legal and illegal overtime scams allow many State Police officers to earn several hundred thousand a year. Anyone who looks into the details of this has to be shocked that so many of our State Troopers, of all people, participated in the illegal scams. That may be why we're so touchy about this.

Starting pay for a trooper is $50K, so the numbers you cite are not what they seem. These guys do a tough, dangerous job; and if they're logging 60(?), 70(?) hours/week in uniform, it's doubly so. In any event, let's get the facts straight before we cast aspersions.

I believe “special duty” is mostly “details” (at least it is in MA) and details are paid for by the contractor/event/facility that hires them plus a little extra for the state. We had local PD who made more than this trooper & 50% was details. A couple of years ago MA SP details were costing the company I worked for close to $100/hr/officer with a 4hr min.

Why do you think I'm casting aspersions? I got this information from the NH government website.
If the information is wrong it isn't because I got the facts wrong.
I do know what the starting pay is for a trooper, so maybe this trooper started working later in the year of 2017. He could of started working in March or April..I really don't why he got less than the starting pay. But regardless what his regular pay is he still put in a lot of extra time.
We as tax payers should be concerned with where our money goes in all government agencies.

That is true but most details on public roads are to install or repair utilities or install and maintain roads and bridges. The contractor figures the cost of details into his bid to perform the work. Therefore, as in most cases, the taxpayer ultimately pays the bill.

Of course the contractor includes the cost in its bid. Should the cost come out of its profit? The utilities include their construction costs in their prices; supermarkets include the cost of moving snow out of their parking lots in their prices; Auto dealers include the cost of security in their prices; and on and on. The user ultimately pays for everything. Would you rather have construction on public highways with no detail? I’ve seen and read about to many contractor deaths caused by distracted drivers. Sometimes you just need to pay for things. And if you think SP are over paid I suggest that you face the guy barricaded in a house with a rifle, be the first one on the scene of a fatal accident, or break up a bar fight. They earn every penny they are paid! (And, yes there are bad apples but, there are bad apples in every walk of life. Just look around you.)

If I compare my salary to that of this state trooper there is zero chance I would want to change positions with him. It’s a dangerous and I’m sure very sad ( the things you see )job. If the club/construction company etc is paying the overtime, let them work all they want IMO.

It's hard for me to comprehend how any trade has the potential of working that much overtime & special duty. I would also think that that person might not be alert during regular duty due to working long hours.

You seem to be making the assumption that his "normal" 40 hours are comprised of Regular and Holiday pay only, and that OT and Special duty are in addition to those 40 hours. Even though starting pay for a trooper is more than the combination of Regular and Holiday pay.

It would appear that Special Duty is, at least part of, his "normal" 40 hours. Special Duty could be being called out here as a separate line item because, if I am reading the website correctly, public companies pay that part of his salary.

So why point out here that its paid for by the contractor if you're going to jump on the guy for pointing out that in the end it's paid by the tax payers if you agree? I would imagine overtime is time and a half or double time, Nobody is saying they don't deserve the extra, There pay is a disgrace, like many jobs in our country. 90% of the detail jobs I see could be handled by a $12 dollar an hour flagger. Everything the gov pays for is tripled from the BS. This is no exception.

I agree, I'd rather see them paid more upfront. I know it doesn't save money but it would be the right thing to do. If they weren't doing all the details they'ed have a better quality of life as well, the contractors wouldn't have to figure in as large chunk of money for traffic control. we all know what happens to prices when gov employees are used. I also know none of this will ever happens, just an exercise in nation building i guess.
