Actually it seems I read somewhere that over time the stock market has continually beat real estate for returns. That article stuck in my mind because I was surprised at this, but whatever. Instead of getting stocks someday your family will be left a home.

Yes and no....not if your stocks were longtime bluechips like Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch, Washington Mutual, American International Group, Fannie Mae, Freddy Mac, General Motors, Chrysler, Wachovia, General Electric, Enron, Toyota, or Lucent....then you can just forget about all that lost money.......sort of like the Meredith-based FRM 'Ponzi' scheme....better to be invested into beer, cigarettes & electricity stocks....items which are true necessities forever ....Look what happened to AT&T, america's widows' & orphans' stock.....AT&T got dialed a wrong number!
