Needless to say, we will stop putting the birdseed out on the front bannister. It does provide the cats some entertainment watching the birds/squirrels, but this guy freaked 'em out yesterday!!!

Great pictures donnamatrix! It must have been exciting to have that bear so close - a little unnerving too. Glad mama bear didn't show up for the party.

I have no idea how the website calculates the THANKS ... but clearly that number being displayed is somehow tied to the DOW of last week!!!
We have lots of photos of our bears. They saunter up the driveway, walk through the yard ... any time of day, it seems. If you closely at the photos you can see the black steel (I think) bar that is twisted back and down toward the porch floor. It used to stick straight out from the front of the porch and hold a bird feeder ... but a larger bear (we didn't see it happen) bent the thing ... my husband who is fairly big & strong, can't get the bar to move!!! Just don't go walking around Suissevale without a noisemaker of some type... wouldn't want to meet up around the corner with a big black bear! |

I have a friend that bought a new hot tub last year and had it installed with all the bells and whistles. A couple of days after he had it installed he heard a noise down stairs and went to investigate and found a full grown bear sitting in the tub like he owned the place. To bad the bear wrecked the tub, over 2,000 in damage.

What I cannot believe is that donnamatrix has never seen a moose living in NH.
You really should take a day during the spring, summer or fall and drive up north to Rt-3 in Pittsburg. Moose ally they call it. Maine has Rt-201, we see so many moose yearly that we take it for granted that some have never seen one. We see them on snowmobiles, ATV's and in the car all the time, as well as bear, coyote, fox, lynx/bobcat. 3 years ago I was mountain biking up behind my house when I came over a ridge and almost ran into a moose. Not sure who was spooked more, him or me.

Trying to guess-timate the weight of a bear is difficult but my guess says it was 300 to 400-lbs, and the three baby bears were maybe 20 to 30-lbs each.
Down at 82 Cattle Landing Rd in Meredith, which is about six house lots up from the Cattle Landing parking lot, tonight at 7:30, I saw this large bear with three cubs cross the road and head up into the undeveloped woods across the road from the lake. As I passed their location, I stopped my car and backed up a bit to get a better look from about 50-feet away, and the mommy bear shooed the three cubs to climb up a large pine tree.....so's I decided to leave. It was one great big, healthy looking, well fed bear all covered with thick black fur and seemed to be a very calm bear.

It's true... I've never seen a live moose. When my husband and I first moved up to NH from MA morethan 10 years ago, we did drive up "moose alley" and ended up in Errol, which is also pretty good moose viewing area. It was Columbus Day Weekend, and we had lunch and asked the waitress where would be a good place to look for moose. She gave us directions to a ski area up the road. Since there was no snow on the ground the ski place wasn't opened yet. We drove up and found the place on a back road. As we drove, we noticed a lot of pickup trucks parked rather haphazardly on the road and wondered about it. Then we saw a guy park a truck and jump out with rifle in hand and traipse into the woods. We realized it was the beginning of hunting season and high-tailed it back to Moultonboro! I have seen a bobcat on our road, several bears (including the one on the front porch), a fisher and more deer than can be counted. I have seen moose tracks in our dirt road... but no critters!

I saw one swimming across the lake near the Long Island bridge. It swam to a beach on LI and ran off. I was a kid then, but our boat and a few others stayed with it until it was safe.

In my few short years coming to the lake, I have not seen a bear. Two years ago in the early morning I saw a moose swimming across. I circled it for a while with the jet ski . I was amazed at the size of it and that it could swim!
We have a den of foxes on our property, they stay to one side and us to the other, they are cute . |

NHboat61: why would you feel okay about circling a swimming animal on a jet ski? I don't care if you were observing the 150-foot rule - just doesn't seem like a good thing to do.

thanks for the clarification. I know when they swim you can only see a little blob of a head above the water. Amazing they can swim at all with thos skinny legs!

It's funny that I just saw this thread. My son just called me from M-Dith and told me a big momma bear actually broke the storm AND entry door to the guest cottage. She had 3 cubs with her that were in a tree until she "called" them to come down. Exciting morning.

That bear and 3 cubs is still around here on Meredith Neck off Cummings Cove Rd. She and her 3 cubs were spotted checking out our trash barrels which were empty last week by the neighbor. No damage and they left quietly.
