Default ..... the wind is free!

Ok ....... well, how about getting there to the MP-HQ to re-register my boats, saving $5/boat off the local price ..... and getting there on my C&L Echo, an 11'11" sailboat, not including the rudder .....it does not need to get registered ...... and the wind is free.....and more likely to be windy now...thanks to the global warming!

Default Where does my money go?

I like that when I register with a matina or town, the town gets some money to maintain public docks, fireboats, launch ramps, etc.

Default I can't wait until . . .

it's done. 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and even some nights and Saturday's are already getting old. With the amount of aggregate and huge rock removal that's been done, I'd be surprised if it was really 'sinking'.

And how much are they paying (1) person to collect fees that can be done elsewhere? My apologies, I forgot it's about job creation.

Misha888-

The Marine Patrol has only approved three days outside of a typical workweek for the project since its start. The Friday after Thanksgiving which is not a day off for many, and two Saturdays for the placement of concrete forms (no heavy construction equipment except form trucks). On two occasions heavy equipment excavators and a crane were delivered on a Saturday but no construction activity was allowed.

To the best of my knowledge, aside from water pumps running after hours, no construction activity has gone beyond allowable hours. FYI, Marine Patrol must approve construction work outside of normal hours.

The Marine Patrol and its Construction Manager, Harvey Construction, have made it clear to our neighbors, island residents, and the Town of Gilford, we intend to have as little impact on them as possible during this project. We have had regular communication with those concerned, monitored dust and debris around vehicles and boats, and maintained safe access to town property. However, from your post it sounds like we are not hearing from everyone. If you have experienced construction at night or anything beyond what was described above, I would appreciate hearing from you. 603-293-2037. Thank you!

And shows other (newer) Forum members that the Marine Patrol actually is watching this forum and takes comments to heart !

We were taking a look today after lunch at the Lyon's Den just as Capt Dunleavy arrived to take a look himself. He took the time to give us an update and said to call him should we ever have any questions. Last summer he gave the Gilford Island Assoc a detailed briefing on the project which was much appreciated.

Looks like the concrete work is done including the deep footings/walls for the waterfront and covered docking. Steel work to start in about 3 weeks.

Default Different Departments

Respectfully you are not correct at all. The Fish & Game Dept. purchased Downing's Landing and will some day renovate I'm sure. Keep in mind that project will be funded by the $5 "public access" portion of your POWER boat registration fees along with some federal funds. Because the primary project on the public access agenda is the state launch on Lake Sunapee...I don't see a lot happening in Alton too soon. Although it may not be complete, Alton is serving the public in its current state.

The Marine Patrol project falls under the Dept. of Safety. It is a capital budget project with bond payments coming from Marine Patrol's operating budget.
Different agencies, budgets, and funding.

Well, someone is lying to you. Yes, two (I recall three) Saturday's construction was happening. I live directly across the way, I don't imagine these things. Maybe next time I will record it.

And the Friday after Thanksgiving is not a day off for many? This is why all our seasonal neighbors were up that weekend. And in the 30 years I have been in the corporate world, Friday's usually are.

Urinating into the wind here, so have a great day! And enjoy your new office.

p.s. Is that annoying blue strobe going to be a constant?

I believe that is just the winter Bob House monitoring station. The full Administration building which is six times that size will be started in a few weeks with the closing of 28A until June of 2017.

Default This is pathetic

Everyone is offering opinions on the Design of the building. HOW About the COST of the building..?? The town OR the state already owns the land.

THAT building in my opinion is maybe..maybe..... a ONE Million dollar building. I think someone mentioned it cost 11 Million. WHAT Am am I missing. NB

NB,

You can barely buy a 2000 sq ft home on shore for a million, do you really think that a building of that size and magnitude which includes the purchase of the land and adjacent Glendale Marina is only worth 1 million? Seriously?? The purchase of the adjacent land and nearly falling down Marina building alone was way more than 1 million. The contract for the site work alone would be more than a million!

You would be lucky to build a Fotomat these days for a million...

Dan

Default Specialty stuff

Good response Ishoot308. You need a special structure to move boats around indoors, perhaps a pressurized paint room, mechanics shop, lifts / marine railway. Can't guess what the State Police operation will need, but I expect they'll have some functions in this building.
The bid specs are public information for anybody who cares to inquire.

approx 2 million was for the purchase of glendale marine.so approx. 9 million for that building sounds high ? but 1 million is the price of a house.

Default ...... local zoning rules

The new MP building is a super-duper design for what it is, a state government home and headquarters for the MP.

What is not so nice is the helter skelter layout of the property lots in the immediate area. For this mish mash mess of 'no town planning' the reason is there were basically no ZONING rules in Gilford until approximately 1985. Zoning rules did not exist here until it was too late, and the results are there to see.

Zoning turned out to be a solution, and not a problem, except it came too late to Gilford.

I stand corrected. I had no idea that a marine business was bought to make more room for this complex. I assumed the property was already owned by the state or town. My Bad. NB

This may have already been posted, but the above link gives details on the true project scope. The facility is 32k+sqft. Lots of class A office space and a complete maintenance facility with indoor crane, reconfigured drive in docking, etc.

The intangibles such as stormwater management, expanded parking, etc that one doesn't think of really jump the price as well.

It will be the Marine Patrol operational HQ for the state. Also the main facility for MP boats maintenance and storage. And will have classrooms for boating certificates. Don't know if they will still have some admin down on Rt 106.

Default Allegedly the Rte 106 office is closing...

When I stopped in to get the boat reg and the mooring permit a couple weeks ago, I said to the lady, "see you next year", as I was leaving. She replied, "you won't see us here...this office is closing and going to the new building"

Default ..... follow the money?

Wow ..... looks like the State of New Hampshire has a hit a grand slam home run with this new MP-HQ ...... and to top it off .....you get to save five bucks off the price of your boat registration as well..... when you go to the walk-in service window at the new MP-HQ.

Go to your local town hall, or local marina, and you pay a five dollar service charge which is not charged by the Marine Patrol ...... so's what a steal of a deal .....a brand new building with a walk-in service window ....that saves you five!!! For me it seems like the difference between $44 and 39-dollars. Five bucks; that's like two complete lunches at the McDonald's value menu ...... omg!

Register via your town clerk or a marina, and the money gets split between the town and the state. Register with the Marine Patrol, and all the money goes to the State of New Hampshire, and not to your town.

Do not know if the money goes into the general fund, or into the Marine Patrol, or what ... but, like who really cares?

Make sure you ride your bicycle to go register your boat so you can also save that $2 worth of gas!

If you judged the building by what's tied up at the docks... you'd think it was an Eastern boat dealership

How would they know if someone was yelling?

And you live next to it 5/6 days a week 8 hours a day of it constantly going off. At times there are two or three. Oh, weekends too even though they state they don't do construction then. Model neighbors, indeed.

If someone is running heavy equipment or driving and backing up a truck on a construction site the back up beeper, or bell, is to warn the people working around the machines who may be in the path of the machine. Generally the view to the rear is less than optimum and the back up alarm is for the workers, not the machine operator. The alarms are required by OSHA. Heavy equipment operators have their ability to hear yelling or other verbal direction limited because of the noise generated by the machine. That is why there are standard hand signals related to the operation of loaders, cranes etc.

Default A small price to pay

Years ago before these safety interventions a flagger was run over and killed while the New London/Sunapee sewer pipeline project was being installed. The alarm noise is a small price to pay in order to keep construction workers safe!
I am sure anyone on the construction site would rather not hear it either!

Default There's a better way

My car beeps to me when anything gets within 8'-10' when my car is in reverse. Just put the same sensors on equipment and make the beep loud and external. That will also keep the equipment from backing into things....maybe even add a backup camera. Cheap add-ons for what is very expensive equipment. Calmer nerves, quieter construction sites, etc. etc. etc. Do I have to invent everything?

Default Any better solution to beepers?

While injury to someone in the path of a machine backing up certainly is something to be avoided, I have to wonder about long-term effectiveness of those hated beepers. After a worker on the site hears that loud repetitive beeping, does he tend to tune it out and just revert to normal attentiveness to the machine and what it is doing? Also, does the machine operator tend to assume that the beeping is a guarantee that the path behind is clear and just back up at will? That would be a threat to anyone who hears the beeping but can't get out of the way quickly enough. There aren't any guarantees.

I also have to wonder about whether there might be more effective solutions than typical government-imposed, one-size-fits-all legislation. I imagine the health care insurance companies that have to cough up when someone is injured on the job would be interested. I suspect the liability insurance companies don't care much, if at all, given that meeting legal compliance with the beeper regulation lets them off the hook. Any thoughts as to might be better for all?

Edit: Orion beat me to responding by four minutes, with some good ideas.

It's for the Children. Don't need no construction equipment inadvertently crushing children (on recess) under their wheels while backing up. Have a heart.

No one, complaining about the Beeps... EVER Saved a Child. NB

I am sorry. Spend, spend , spend $$ Do respect the Marine Patrol and their thankless "at times job" and all the part timers - teachers , retired folks and young folks that want to work for them.
This building looks bigger then the US Coast Station New Castle New Hampshire. I hear the State trooper just got a new barracks there too..

However Is a $10 Million building really necessary on the Lake? I guess someone pushed it through! Federal Monies and or state monies or both? Must have a nice holding pen or jail in it, education center etc.. to much just IMO.

This reminds me of my hometown of Stratham in 2006 the town voted in (close vote) a 7 million dollar fire station to this day with its 8 full double stalls front and back only 2 or 3 are occupied.

At the least the building has a water view..

I think that $10m is short money personally when you consider this is a long overdue STATE HEADQUARTER facility. This new facility (to my understanding) will have offices, training center & classrooms for Boater Ed and other purposes, holding cell(s) as well as Statewide dispatch center in addition to servicing the entire State of NH's Marine fleet.

When you look at this facility from the water, you get a different perspective. At least half (perhaps more) of the physical size of the building is "high bay" construction for boat storage and maintenance.

Well Mike most of this thread has been about the new Marine Patrol building in Glendale, Gilford. Hence my comment a while ago about the new roof.

However another thread did talk about the buildings at Downings Landing being taken down. They are now gone, your old shop only a memory.
http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...wnings+landing
The pavilion burned several years ago and has been rebuilt, now condos and some small shops.
