It sounds like the only thing we know for sure is that whoever is taking care of the website is a criminally awful writer.

Default I need AI

In a flash, I went from Coe House to Belknap College to an illiterate web site to JBolty's stroke to (who remembers?) the Paddlin' Professor, to Chef Elmar's Kentucky High Pie at the Red Hill Inn.

Well, they've also been open for 3 days yet have 6 5-star google reviews, and 3 of them are from people with the same last name.

Harry Briggs, a Prof at Belknap College. Previously at Northwestern University, he swam marathons on Lake Erie. In the mid 60's he did several long distance swims on Lake Winnipesaukee. More details on Google, although it appears they were less interested in his NH days. Or, I confused the two listings. Anyway, always reported in local news as the "Paddlin' Professor".

Its great they're open from 4-9 Thursday -Sunday but Happy Hour is 3-5 and 9-11. Sounds very slip-shod

They really think $23 bucks for a burger is going to fill the restaurant?

I'm guessing you missed it, but their comfort food is "inspired."

So, it's really $18 for the burger and $5 for the inspiration. Bon appétit.

Fair enough.

I'm just being snarky because it appears there was an injustice done to the owners of Gusto, who put time and effort into the place after the previous owners shut down.

Let’s hope they don’t do the same thing to these new owners.

I agree about the Gusto owners. I watched them do construction for months, turning that place around and putting their own stamp on the place. I don't know what happened to cause them to leave but I agree that it seemed like an injustice against them. The new tenant will surely have to contend with that, and I just think calling themselves by the same name (taphouse) with the same style font comes off very predatory.

It's pretty interesting that someone would effectively offer to profit share with a landlord. I'm not a restaurant guy, but I am a business guy and this type of arrangement seems like business suicide for the restaurant proprietor. I wonder if Gusto entered into a similar agreement, then this gentleman came along and offered a bigger slice of the pie? If this is the case, I suspect that maybe Gusto, after writing a few profit sharing checks was unwilling to give up more???

It's all speculation on my part, I have no idea what is going on here. But I am very disappointed that Gusto left that location. I really think that they hit their stride there, the food was wonderful, their events well thought out and entertaining, hopefully they can keep that stride going back across the street in a smaller space.

My issue with a profit sharing scenario is that the share comes out of the restaurant's gross profit... most likely. There is a lot of competing needs for that money, including equipment and maintenance needs, expansion needs, debt, cash flow needs, it just goes on and on. If not well designed, the landlord could end up with a bigger ultimate payout than the people putting the blood sweat and tears into the business take home.

Again, I have no personal understanding of what is actually transpiring here, but if it's correct, it does explain why businesses have struggled in this location. I hope that the new restaurant does well and lasts a long time. I'm certainly going to give it a few tries.

Pretty unlikely there is a profit sharing arrangement, more likely a fixed monthly rent. I believe Gustos was paying around 6K….tough nut to crack in the off season.

Every time you drive past this old Coe House, you must think "thank God I sold that place like 15-years ago for the big money and got the hell away from it...."

Glad to be retired for sure but when I drive by I think of the fun we had during the year of restoration and the years we ran the Coe House Restaurant. Wish it had stayed a little more upscale. Pretty fancy building with lots of overhead for beer and burgers

Just looking at the menu again, and the burger is now $19.

I worked with Chef Elmer before he worked at the college. St Pierre's Restaurant on Church Street in Laconia. He was a heck of a nice guy. I think I had his Kentucky High Pie once but the was a long time ago

You are correct, and it's been noted and edited. I'll chalk that one up to autocorrect!

Swimmer is correct but both Swimmer and Think are fans of the introductory “Ummm”, to questionable effect.

Ummm...questionable?!

Also, for a small comparison: Pub 23's wings were MUCH better than Taphouse Winnipesaukee's. Especially for one smackeroo each!
