I whole WP legend actually started with a poll on the forum as to the best lobster roll on the lake. WP won hands down and caused me to go and many others. So now in 2009 where is the best lobster roll on the lake?

Down at this end of the lake I'd vote for Pop's. $13.95 with fries. Served on a buttered, grilled hot dog roll with just the right amount of mayonaise.

We had lobster rolls at the Lobster Pound at Weirs Beach last night. $18.00, so a little on the high side, but VERY delicious. We'll go back again.
Got them as carry out, but I'd like to go back for a regular meal as well.

SamIAm's lobster rolls at the Dari are always top notch, I can't get enough of them.
And that barely 5 foot tall blue-eyed curly-headed blonde dynamo that I eventually have to put through college serving them is always a bonus ![]() |

Sam and Rosie's, Center Harbor, Lobster Roll is the best as far as I am concerned. I believe they are running $16.95 now. Large claw and tail meat, just the right amount of mayo.

OK,getting a little nervous here...nobody has mentioned Sawyers. Coming up very soon now,and it has always been "Go to Sawyers; go directly to Sawyers;do not pass go...." it IS open, right? I'll be having a melt down if I can't get their lobster roll...not to mention those onion rings ( the likes of which we never, ever see down here!).

Been to Sawyers 5 times so far - got lobster rolls each time. A solo roll is
$13, and still is served cold only (wish they'd do it warm), but is perfect every time. Consistant year after year. |

We enjoy the lobster roll at the Wolfe Trap. We go on a Sun or Sat afternoon, sit outside and enjoy the view of the back eddie, order steamers and then the lobster roll. What a wonderful afternoon!

I'm trying to plan my August trip now. We'll be staying at the Naswa, so we'll probably do lunch there. Might even try to catch the Mount ride, although we might miss the 12:30 departure time. I was thinking the Lobster Pound for Friday night, Saturday night we'll be at Meadowbrook, for both din din and a concert. Depending on the menu selections, I might have two or more lobster rolls for comparison ![]() |

Would you believe that D'Angelo's (1056 UNION AVENUE, RTE. 3
LACONIA, NH 03246 Tel: 603-524-6300) has an awesome Lobster Salad sub? The prices aren't listed on their on-line menu but I believe I paid $12 for a medium. ![]()

You have to try Michael's in the Weirs the best lobster roll I've had on the lake. All lobster no fillers lightly toasted bun with your choice of a side for 18.95. Alll their seafood is very good fresh and huge portions! The seafood stuffed haddock is the best!

Yesterday we went to the dump - I mean the transfer station - and while chatting with one of the older gentlemen that works there, we got talking about Skelley's. He said they have the best lobster rolls, he got them the night before for company - couldn't say enough. So guess what our next stop was? I'm not a big seafood person - but hubby went right in for a lobster roll to go. I'm told that it was $13 and I could see that it had plenty of lobster. Might be worth a try!

We ordered lobsters rolls for lunch at the Lobster Pound- good thing we got the large instead of the overstuffed- because the large was stuffed-- there were huge hunks of tail and claw meat-- the price was either 14.95 or 16.95- included fries (and corn bread).

Can someone who understands the restaurant business explain why on earth Lobster Rolls are going for $18? I just read in the Union Leader that Lobster prices are so low that some Maine Lobstermen are thinking of parking their boats until the price goes up.
I remember the last year that Waldo Peppers was in the old location, their lobster roll was $10.95 or $11.95 and that included fries. I plan to boycott lobster rolls until the price is reasonable. As much as I love them I refuse to pay $18. |

When the prices are down, I usually make it to the local supermarket and have them steam up 4 or 6 lobsters. I take them home and shuck them....cut them up...toast a fresh roll....stuff it and pour a little melted butter over the top and try not to devour it.
The leftover gets chilled and I add a bit of Hellman's mayonnaise ( this makes a difference, the cheap mayonnaise is awful ) I never complain about having lobster rolls 2 days in a row! |

My vote goes to Sam and Rosies.....6 oz of pure lobster meet, perfectly prepared, served with o-rings or fries. I have not tried Kevin's yet, but plan to do so before season's end. And as a hint to Kevin/Laura, I am keeping my fingers crossed that Kevin's lobster rolls are served with their yummy cole slaw.

Last Friday, Market Basket in Tilton and Concord were selling lobsters at 4.99 a pound. Picked up a few. Cooked them up. I have the best lobster rolls LOL! Beats the $18 price tag charged by the restuarants.

Also when you make it yourself you don't have to include the leg meat. As we have discussed before, the amount of leg meat varies, but most establishments make rolls with some portion of leg meat included.

Last year Heath`s bought a commercial steamer and now will steam lobsters while you wait. Takes about 20 minutes to steam up to 5-6. No more 24 hour notice.

Folks,
As much as I love lobster rolls, paying $13 - $17 for it today is absolutely rediculous. You are all being had. Lobsters are available for under $5 a pound. The price for a lobster roll, even if they fill it with 1 lb of lobster meat (which I highly doubt) should run you no more than $9 - $10 bucks. I have taken the liberty of buying lobsters this year cheap, boil them, mix in some celery and mayo, and voila.....the best lobster rolls anywhere, and for less than half the cost of what you all are paying. I hope you all enjoy your rolls. I sure am. |

Convenience is one thing, price gouging is another. If you want to pay double for convenience, go for it. I will opt not to partake in overpriced lobster (and in some cases langostino) filled hotdog rolls.
Just an FYI if you decide to make it yourself, if you shave the celery real thin, you hardly notice it but it adds a slightly better texture to the lobster mix. Enjoy. |

Better check your math. If you ever picked a pound of Lobster Meat, you would know it takes five to six 1 1/2lb lobsters to get 1 pound of lobster meat. Even at $4.99 a pound it would cost $38-$45 to make a pound. Usually Cheaper to buy it than to pick your own. On top of all this, $4.99 a pound is hard to find. |

Are you OK? I see the analogy you are trying to make, but unless you are grinding up a whole 1lb lobster (shells, guts, and all), your $5 a lb. is going to yield very very very little meat. I think you came up with a good idea for a post, didn't think it thru, and... well, the result is not very good. Lobster is cheaper now, to be sure. But a lb. of meat....gotta be 25/30 dollars. |

I just googled lobster yield and the average is 17-21 % yield of meat to raw weight. So based on that lobster would be about $25 to 30 a lb.How much is in a typical L roll, dont know.

Might even be able to view an awesome sunrise or sunset that inspires us. To all the naysayers,
I didn't say that a 1 pound lobster would yield 1 lb of meat. I mentioned 1 lb because some places claim that they put that in the rolls (non of these places are around the lake region). Most, however, put between 1/3 to 1/2 pound of lobster meat. I have pulled enough meat of a 1 lb lobster and made lobster rolls that equal or beat the amount of meat that most places give. If you don't believe me, try it for youself and compare it to Sawyers, Lobster Pound, Tamarack, etc. They are not giving you more than 1/2 pound of meat at most. The real point I was making was if lobster is so cheap, why are prices for lobster meals still going up. Howver, after reading the responses here, it seems most of you don't really think about it and will pay higher prices just for convenience. Hey, it's your money. Just don't be surprised next year if lobster prices are higher and your rolls are now $20. Would you be willing to pay that much for convenience? |

You wrote: You are all being had. Lobsters are available for under $5 a pound. The price for a lobster roll, even if they fill it with 1 lb of lobster meat (which I highly doubt) should run you no more than $9 - $10 bucks. The equation you were using, was $5 a lb, so double it, and the roll should be $10. There is no question about it. Just say that you did no think it thru. I believe it is obvious. And I do agree the rolls in the Lakes Region are a bit pricey. But remember, they have 3 months to make their money. |

Gouging?....Really....Just for your information,Fatboynh.....A typical soft shell lobster yields 3 oz of meat,A hard shell yields 4 oz,but they run $7-$8 per pound. Now you have $8 into a typical 1/4 lobster roll, plus the roll itself, paper holder,a few fries and you're up to $9 cost.
Now add the restaurant payroll, mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities, overhea d...and the greedy restaurant owners are ripping you off for about 4.5% profit (typical bottom line from National Restaurant Assoc.) Nothing wrong with making your own,but I can tell ya' that nobody is getting rich selling you a lobster roll. |

To all the "professional analysts" who posted:
Show me where I said specifically that a 1 lb lobster equalls 1 lb of meat! You can't, because I didn't say that. You're looking into this too deep, brain surgeons. You obviously need to chill out. Here's what you do...go down to your favorite restaurant and order a lobster roll. Since you don't mind spending $$$ fot it, it should make you happy. Sayonara!!! |

OK, I'll bite...
Yep, you never said (wrote) it. But here is what you did write: " The price for a lobster roll, even if they fill it with 1 lb of lobster meat (which I highly doubt) should run you no more than $9 - $10 bucks" Show me where a lb. of lobster meat (not a whole lobster, but lobster meat) sells for less than $9/$10, and I'm sure SAMIAM, Mike Ray, and everyone else will line up and buy 100 lbs this afternoon. Come on now.....you thought to yourself "wow, lobsters are 4.99/5.99 a lb, so how can a lobster roll be $$17/$18?" Forgetting that a 4.99 lobster has very little meat to work with. An honest mistake...you just did not think it thru. I don't think anyone is trying to hate on you. Just don't insult our intelligence. |

FatboyNH...
Lobster fishermen pay nothing for the lobster they catch, except for the incidental costs your not factoring in, like those itemized by SAMIAM. How does the price go from 0 to $7-8/#? It's the costs of getting it from sea to roll with all the fixin's and a small profit for those who are into this for... a small profit. Like to make your own? Some poeple like celery in theirs. Ever try to buy one stock of celery? How about one hot dog roll? or two? or three? Any restaurant owners out there making a 30% profit on their rolls? Doubt it. I'm not seeing many Lamborghinis in their parking lots. And how do you feel paying $10.95 for spaghetti? I saw a whole 1# box in the market recenly for $0.79, plus the cost of sauce of course...a little Parmesian or Romano? Gettin' hungry!

If there is one thing I don't think anyone can accuse Samiam of, it is gouging. He has some of the best prices around at his restaurant!

![]() ![]() I remember reading an article years ago that broke out margins for restaurants. It went a long way towards explaining why so many restaurants that sprout up today serve Mexican food, chicken, and fries. I could sell most everything for half of what most places charge. But by the end of the month, I'd have no money for utilities, water, nor rent. If Lobster rolls were so outrageously profitable, everyone would sell them. I think around here, there's only one place that has them $17.95, with too many fries. What I'd be selling more of is sugared water and fries. Next week, we review the margins on coffee ![]() |

D'Angelo's lobster roll is quite good. Tried it last night, after working very late (they're open until 10p.m.) and didn't feel like cooking when I got home. I hadn't had a lobster roll in over 2 years. Guess it was just a "oh-what-the-heck" moment...
Got 2 medium subs with lettuce - Argie hadn't done supper yet, either. The lobster meat was very chunky - whole claws were found in mine a couple of times. The mayo was light - not over powering or soupy. The lettuce was a little rough - not as leafy as I'd like but more the white/stem part of the leaf. There was quite a bit of meat in the sub - it was big and well stocked. I think I would have preferred the roll vs. the sub just because of the lettuce and bread. However, I have no regrets and at $11.99* for a medium sub, I thought it was pretty fair! Ayah, good lobsta roll. ![]() ![]() It's the damn 9% sales tax that's a rip-off! *Go to www.dangelo.com for a coupon for $4.00 off 2 med or lg subs. |
