Couple Quick Vids: Sally's Gut/Weirs Channel

Holla!
Had the GoPro hooked up and took some vids of Sally's Gut and the Weirs Channel from Saturday the 18th (last Saturday of Bike Week/before Father's Day). Was a busy day out there for sure. These are sped up for timing (SG = 4X and WC = 8X).
Also, the third video is of my chillens on Big Mable, in case anyone searching for a tube wanted to see what it looked like being towed.

Those were fun to watch. I love going through Sally's Gut, it's one of my favorite places on the lake and has been since I was a kid.

If you like Sally's Gut, bring your boat Long Lake/BrandyPond/Songo River/Sebago Lake some time. The Songo River is like miles of Sally's Gut with a lock in the middle. Great fun. There aren't as many ports to visit as Winni, but it's a nice day trip and worth a visit. The Songo River is very well marked and easy to navigate too. Locking through is fun, both ways. I think round trip costs 7 bucks.

I couldn't help but notice the drunk guy in front of you going through the Weirs Channel..or a newbie (he was headed for the NAZWA, perhaps he pre-gamed?).

He was all over the place.

I think he was struggling to control the boat in the current/wave action--not sure if because he was new, lit, or because it was busy.

Your last video was also interesting. The thumbnail image that youtube used is split between two sections of video, almost looks like you're towing two tubes at one time with one in the air.

Yes, you just have to pass through Brandy Pond (which is to Long Lake as Paugus Bay is to Winnipesaukee) to do so. There's a fixed height bridge that most boats will have no trouble with between Long Lake and Brandy Pond. Then there's a low clearance swing bridge just upstream of the lock that opens in conjunction with the lock opening. The bridge and the lock are both manually operated and very fascinating to see in action. There's a convenient ice cream joint next to the swing bridge, so if you have to wait for the bridge/lock, you can get a nice treat.

Quick question for those who've given these a look-see: would they be more enjoyable at regular or a little slower speed? They're in the 5-7 minute range because they're no-wake speed.

They were too fast for me. I started to watch the Weirs Channel video and I had to shut it off because it made me dizzy. I thought it was a computer problem.

Thanks for posting the vids. When I go through the channel, it's to get to a destination. I appreciate that some just want to go as slow as possible and eyeball everything and everybody. If you put popcorn in the microwave as you go under the bridge, it's ready as you leave at the south end. Now, that's makin' headway.

Great video of a kind of unique, out of the way place on Winnie.

Interestingly, many years ago we rented a house on Sally's Gut. Big place, 5 bedrooms, a huge family-cave and a screened in gazebo with hot tub. The place was for sale at the time and we were amazed at the outrageous asking price. $450K, if I recall!

Oh, and it included a pretty nice boathouse ... seen at about 26 seconds in the video on the right..... if only we knew.....

I had to laugh at the second video as I am the guy that was driving the boat that was going all over the place. While I do consider myself a "newbie" to boating as this is only my second season on the lake, I was not drunk. The reason I am all over the place in the video is that unlike most people on the lake, I have a jet boat. Jet boats have a real hard time tracking straight at headway speed and additionally the boats in front of me were going even slower than usual. What a lot of people do not know is that jet boats do not have a true neutral. There is always a little thrust in the forward direction. Also, when you put a jet boat in reverse while moving forward it tends to want to spin the boat. Hence what you saw when I was getting very close to the gas dock..

Please know that I am not trying to defend myself as I was very amused when I watched the video and as much reading the comments, but I did feel compelled to explain why you may see a boat not tracking straight at slow speeds.

I actually tried a Jetski a couple weeks back and can completely understand what you're talking about. Unless you're on the gas it tends to spin. Must make docking interesting.

Yes, at first docking was a pain, but you get used to it after a while. You just need to anticipate your moves further ahead then with a prop drive.
