Has anyone spotted any bald eagles nesting around the lake. We were lucky enough to catch an adolescent at Little Six last year and hoping for a little more luck this year. Thanks.

There is a pair nesting on the west side of Smith Cove... I've seen them since ice fishing this past winter.. Saw the female the other day...

We have seen an eagle flying over East Bear Island several times this spring. Recently, it flew east toward Six Mile Island. 🦅

Two weeks ago at what seems like that very same branch there were two of them. However we were at "Minister Island"

My son may have taken a photo or two. I'll see if he saved the images.

We had two perched in a tree at our camp that we watched for about 30 minutes! One was a fully mature eagle with solid white head the other was immature without the white head yet. They are huge!!

Eagles certainly seem to have made a come back.

Heck, we have nesting pairs near downtown Portland, Oregon.

There are adults and youngsters in the nest on Minister Island (commonly called Blueberry Island). That nest is quite easy to spot from the north side of the island, and the eagles display themselves on various branches and rocks around the island frequently. There are also a couple of eagles in a nest on Dolly Island. That nest can be seen well from the west side of Dolly and Bear - directly above the white boat house.

Two weeks ago I was fishing beside Diamond Island. I caught a three year old Salmon and released it as I usually do. Sometimes when you release the fish they lay stunned for about a minute or so and then they spark up and dive. While continuing to troll away I always keep an eye on the fish to be sure that it is OK. All of a sudden, out of nowhere. a very large Eagle swooped in and scooped that fish up like a C141 doing a cargo drop, and off it flew, just above the water, straight up to Welch Island. It was one of the coolest sights I have ever seen! (It also happened to me fishing near Locke and Welch about eight years ago)

They are indeed a magnificent sight to see!!

There is an eagle's nest about a hundred yards north of the south end of Round Island. We have seen an eagle perched on a tree limb nest to the shore, waiting patiently for a tasty meal. 🦈 🦅

a very large male eagle took up residence near the Channel and patrols Paugus Bay, the channel and the weirs area, I am sure a larger area. He has a perch on the last pine when leaving the channel into the larger part of the lake, almost blends right in.

yesterday he was circling the no wake can on the Bay side of the channel and swooped down and grabbed a fish not more than 30-40 feet from us. From those that have saw him since end of winter there, they say he is not afraid of boats, and I would say he wasn't considering how busy it was when he dropped into the lake.

Enjoy but hide the small dogs, and babies if you see him

Eagles love loon chicks. I hope they stay away from our two newborn chicks.

Both males and female adult eagles look similiar. If the bird is very large, it is probably a female as they are larger than males. Easiest way to distinguish is if they are together in a pair and then the size difference is apparent. Good luck with eagle sightings!

In the past that eagles nest was very visible. Now the trees along the shore line have grown and are blocking the view of the nest. The nest was very prominent on one of the tallest trees on the island.

If you're speculating that it's a male because it appears to be "very large" you need to know that male Eagles like all other raptors are on average roughly 30% smaller than their female counterparts. I often see an adult Bald Eagle along Weirs Blvd and it is a female.

This is the one I am referring to and I spotted her atop a scrub pine on Weirs Blvd last year.

Had one in my back yard on Opechee yesterday! Perched in a big old pine tree on the shore.

S/he was being pestered by a hawk, who in turn was being bothered by some crows.

Why can't we all just get along?

We often see them with binoculars doing the "search circle" very high above our house between Winter Harbor and Mirror Lake. Haven't seen them dive from that height yet. Got to spend more time with them.

We've been seeing an adult cruise low past our place on the Broads-side of Rattlesnake very frequently this year. Keep your small dogs close by.

It would have to be a real small dog, If I remember correctly they can maybe carry 5lbs. But they are very conscious of the fight. An Injury is usually deadly in the wild so the risk reward is a real factor.

Saw an immature (but big!) bald eagle overfly Ragged Island on Sunday. He/she took a perch above the Cow Island mailboat dock.

If you are in the Concord area, I see them all the time flying up and down the Merrimack River, especially just south of the Garvins Falls Dam.

There is an eagles nest on the west side of Clay Point in Alton.

I know that an eagle would not be able to "take" my 12 pound dog far, but to could grab, drop and kill them quite easily. My opinion and fear.

As stated above, these eagles have gotten very smart about capturing the recently released fish. An easy meal! I recently watched one hassle a boat just out from me. It was pretty cool to see. I expect the fishermen were surprised!

This is pretty much a common occurrence with the fishermen around Welch. The eagle parks himself / herself right in a large pine on the southern tip and watches the fishing boats. As soon as a fish is released they go for it. I have personally seen an eagle carry off a 4 lb rainbow trout up into a tree without a problem.

I would think your 12 lb pup would be safe BUT better to be safe than sorry!!

Thanks for the reassurance, Dan! These birds of prey really are amazing and a complete joy to see. I am glad that my dogs don't usually hang on the dock to temp one. Lol.

My summer is going very well. Paul is crazy busy, but we are both so glad that our plans to sell a few years ago fell through. (Thank you, God!) Working on improvements to make long-term island life easier. Our 15th season here!

Except for stunned fish, Eagles will scavenge any floating fish. (And an opportune time to have a camera at-the-ready).

Osprey always take live fish; however, that makes them targets for Bald Eagles. Due to their legendary "eagle-eye", they'll take off to fly at their rarely used top speed to intercept Ospreys. Ospreys will call repeatedly in distress; but burdened with their catch, still drop a lot of dinners to this bullying.

Besides watching for Ospreys, Eagle-watchers should listen for Mother Nature's warnings:

1) Chipmunks call out repeated "Munk" sounds when there's an aerial predator about. For some reason, they're not fooled by ultra-light aircraft overhead.

2) Crows will gather around an Eagle ashore "minding his own business" and gather closely to "caw" loudly and repeatedly, until they drive him off. One crow following close behind will keep him going away.

3) Loons use an abbreviated warning call. (Ah-oo).

Last weekend, I saw a large brown bird speeding from Tuftonboro Neck to Gilford. In less than a minute, I heard a Loon sound a call described as the "Yodel"—another aerial predator call. (Neither bird could be seen at that time). Loons will also "alert" to ultralights and noisy, speeding, powerboats.

Sailing, I can approach closely without anxiety on their part.

There may be a chance to see the Golden Eagle—rare in Eastern States.

Off Carry Beach, a large Eagle, which I failed to identify (as to which one) swooped down to "dinner" within several feet of my sailboat. As it swooped upwards, "empty-handed", I saw a large white patch under each wing.

Now I had to think, could that have been a Golden Eagle or a juvenile Bald Eagle?



People who know these birds, say a Golden Eagle will never have white spots under their "wing-pits".

I saw a bald eagle and possibly a younger bald eagle at Blueberry Island, near black cat, it was on a rock near the red and black markers near Hull and blueberry islands. It was a sight to see!

I saw two eagles on Dolly Island on Sunday. I heard them long before I saw them. I was out kayaking and luckily someone was coming out of the cove who had seen them before and pointed them out to me. You could make out their silhouettes against the bright sky but you had to be out near the moored sailboat to see the top of the tree where they were. We passed by around 6 on our way home and one was in a dead tree above the boathouse. The light was right and you could see it clearly. Unfortunately I didn't have the right camera with me and didn't get a good shot.

Yesterday, our guest asked me to listen to an unfamiliar sound near our cottage on East Bear Island. I heard a squawk and said that an eagle may be nearby. Two bald eagles were perched on a lakeside pine tree, looking for a late afternoon snack. About ten minutes later, they flew away toward Six Mile Island. 🐻

Went back to Dolly with a better camera and found this juvenille making a racket. There was another juvenille hiding in the branches nearby but I didn't see the adult.
